BlackBerry 10 is off to a ‘very solid start’, says UK and Ireland MD

Rob Orr says success in the UK will act as a good indicator as to how the platform will perform globally

Opening weekend sales of the BlackBerry Z10 were described as “very solid” by the firm’s UK and Ireland MD Rob Orr.

The new device – the first to run off the new BlackBerry 10 software – was unveiled by the firm’s president and CEO Thorsten Heins on January 30 and went on sale in the UK exclusively less than 24 hours later.

Orr said the decision to launch the Z10 in the UK first – ahead of its home market in Canada – shows its importance to the firm.

Orr said: “The UK is a hugely important market from a volume perspective, as well as in terms of our position within the context of the wider global market.

“The UK is therefore a good indicator of the level of success we can achieve on a global basis.”

BlackBerry Z10 teardown reveals key Qualcomm and Samsung internals

The BlackBerry Z10 has already arrived in a few markets and while we are still waiting for it to arrive in the United States bringing the new BlackBerry 10 platform in March, UBM Tech Insights has torn the whole device down revealing its hardware. Somewhat surprisingly, it is very similar to the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III in that it runs on an identical Qualcomm chip. BlackBerry has obviously ditched its previous partner Texas Instruments and opted for Qualcomm’s chips.

The BlackBerry Z10 has a Qualcomm MSM8960 chip manufactured on the 28nm node with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The chip integrates 3G and 4G LTE on board.

Otherwise, the Z10 uses two other key Samsung components - a 2GB RAM module and 16GB of Samsung-made internal flash storage.

Below is a listing of the key hardware components in the Z10:

Analyst thinks BlackBerry 10 is nothing but "a gambit intended to facilitate a sale of RIM"

analyst dont know a thing.. they just keep on talking s**t! no one can predict what will happen to the future!

this is one of the worst jobs in the world (the other one being a paparazzi)!

HP bought palm for they think webOS is really futuristic, and all people think of that as well! but HP has a very bad leadership! bad CEO thats why they are going down now! (same as nokia, very very bad CEO, MeeGo was the future, they are just afraid to see that)

also same as google motorola, motorola dont make a buzz after they are bought by google, but i hope that will change this year!

unlike the situation of RIM and BB, they have the almost perfect combination... they have good leadership and good CEO, coz the past CEO before still think touchscreen and iphones are just toys and its platform will be just fine..but CEO Heins change that with BB10..

they also have huge support to the devs.. i mean 70,000 apps at launch?! thats amazing! and they will reach 100,000 apps in no time! they might achieve that in less than a year, unlike WP, they just got the 100,000 apps after 2 years!

so again, alalyst talk s**ts... and clearly this writer dont shock me about writing this things since he always write bad things for BB and RIM image... sad story that forbes still accept him!

BlackBerry 10 gets 19,071 new app submissions in last two days; stock soars 11% in Canada

Things are really beginning to fall into place for RIM. One area where BlackBerry appeared weak was with the number of available apps in BlackBerry App World. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has stated that the size of an App Store doesn't matter and that RIM plans to carry the top 200 to 400 apps in each country and region. It is estimated that 70,000 apps will be available by the time the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry X10 are launched. In an effort to add more apps,  RIM held three Port-a-Thons where Android developers could receive $100 for each of their apps they submit to BlackBerry 10. In addition, RIM handed out its BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha all-touchscreen phone to developers and plans on launching one for its BlackBerry X10 model with a physical QWERTY on board, sometime after January 30th. The first time in mid December, 4,000 apps were submitted. In the middle of this month, 15,000 more were sent in over a 37 hour period. That was followed by the last Port-a-Thon which just ended with 19,071 apps sent to RIM in just 36 hours, according to a tweet sent out by RIM. That works out to 529 apps per hour or $52,900 from RIM's coffers.

Meanwhile, while the U.S. markets were closed on Monday to observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Canadian markets were open and the continued good news about RIM topped by the video we showed you comparing the BlackBerry Z10 quite favorably with the Apple iPhone, got investors in a buying mood. Last week, we showed you the Island Reversal on RIM's stock chart which is a bullish pattern. On Monday, the shares soared nearly 11% to close at $17.41 CD, up $1.70 CD. Of course, RIM has a long way to go to reach its all time high which was above $140 USD in 2008.

RIM to introduce both BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry X10 next week; contract price will be below $199

Exciting news for those waiting for BlackBerry 10. The latest rumor is that RIM will not only introduce the new OS on January 30th, but will also unveil both the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry X10 with a physical QWERTY keyboard. And the kicker is that both models will sell for less than $199 on contract. It really looks like RIM is going to be making a statement a week from Wednesday.

Additionally, the video that we showed you on Sunday comparing the BlackBerry Z10 with the Apple iPhone 5 revealed that a Siri-esque voice activated personal assistant will be included with the OS. There is also some speculation that BlackBerry App World will offer movies and television shows and screenshots of the home screen show that Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Foursquare are pre-installed on the new BlackBerry devices. Evernote will be available in the Docs to Go app which will allow users to open, edit and save documents to the cloud.

We have some new screenshots for you to look at as we are getting closer to January 30th and the beginning of what appears to be the comeback of BlackBerry.

BlackBerry 10 browser beats iOS 6 and Windows Phone 8 in rendering speed

BlackBerry 10 missed this Holiday season, but it’s gearing up for a big launch early next year, and leaks of devices and the operating system are all over the place. You probably already know how BB10 looks like, and also how you can easily navigate around using swipes and other gestures, but one important aspect that we get to look at today is browser performance.

These latest tests of the browser on a BB10 prototype show rendering speeds and are very impressive. Gadget Masters got their hands on a Dev Alpha B smartphone running BB10 and fared it against the iPhone 5’s Mobile Safari browser on iOS 6 and an HTC Windows Phone 8X with Windows Phone 8’s Internet Explorer.

We could safely say that BlackBerry 10 beats both. Take a look below.

Ice, Ice Baby: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to test BlackBerry 10 next year

While Vanilla Ice isn't poised for a comeback, BlackBerry is.RIM's shares continued to rise on Wednesday, setting a 7 month high at $13.31 for a 5.63% gain on the day. Meanwhile a RIM spokesman had some good news for RIM investors when he said that the U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) will be testing the new BlackBerry 10 platform. What makes this interesting is that ICE had originally announced that it was switching from BlackBerry phones for its employees to the Apple iPhone. That decision made back in October, affected 17,600 employees and was said to be worth $2.1 million in new handset orders for Apple. At the time, an ICE spokesman said that BlackBerry smartphones "no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency." But early next year, ICE will begin a pilot program using the new BlackBerry 10 handsets and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10. The latter lets government users and corporations run new devices on their networks. Major corporations and government agencies have been loathe to switch from BlackBerry to other platforms because of the security inherent on BlackBerry devices. But others felt that the Apple iPhone and Android handsets offered a much better user experience with many more features than BlackBerry. RIM says the new devices will still have the same great security in addition to running smoother and faster than currently available BlackBerry models.

It is unknown what ICE intends to do with this pilot program. There is some speculation that it will use BES 10 to manage both BlackBerry 10 and Apple iPhone handsets. Meanwhile, the rally in RIM's stock on Wednesday occurred when long time bear Eric Jackson (the founder of Ironfire Capital), reversed his position and became bullish on the stock, forcing some short-covering.

BlackBerry 10 to come with deep Evernote integration

BlackBerry 10, the upcoming overhaul of RIM’s mobile operating system, is likely to feature deep integration with the most popular note-taking service Evernote. While Apple for instance has been working on integrating Facebook and Twitter deeper into its system, BlackBerry which values its corporate customers adds Evernote on top of that.

The finding comes shortly after RIM released the BlackBerry 10 SDK for developers to get serious about bringing their apps to BB10.

One of the new apps that has now come into focus in BlackBerry 10 is “Remember,” a personal information manager. Apart from aggregating emails, contacts and calendars, there is a separate “Notebooks” which is “folder-like object that contains notebook entries.”

With competing platform Apple having a very basic note app and Android lacking a built-in notes application, this could be one kind of a differentiator BlackBerry has nailed right.

Another BlackBerry 10 video tutorial leaked

Earlier this month, we showed you a leaked video tutorial for the BlackBerry 10 L-Series handset. The gestures displayed in the video allowed the user to see the tool bar on the top of the screen by pulling down on the display. At the same time, a tool bar on the bottom disappeared. An upward scroll of the screen reduced the image to thumbnail size.

This time, the image on the screen reveals a weather application rather than the travel website or app that was seen on the first leak. The gestures appear to be the exact same as seen previously. Like the first leak, it isn't much but it does show us how the gesture based UI handles some tasks. What do you guys think about this early look at BB10?

RIM releases gold build of its BlackBerry 10 SDK

At the recent BlackBerry Jam Asia conference, the company displayed over 70 new apps including ones from Fox Sports and MTV. RIM doesn't expect to offer 700,000 apps for BlackBerry 10 at launch and immediately compete with the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. CEO Heins has already said that when it comes to app stores, size doesn't matter. RIM's game plan is to have the top 200 to 400 apps available for each country and each region. But will that be enough to satisfy smartphone buyers who are accustomed to choosing from hundreds of thousands of apps, even if many are useless?

Over the past few months, developer outlook toward RIM has improved broadly and significantly. According to a recent Pivot Point Research survey commissioned by RIM*, 58% of developers surveyed would recommend BlackBerry 10 as a development platform, a 123% increase from May to October, 2012. The survey also found a steady increase in satisfaction with the BlackBerry 10 platform among developers, growing by 56% over the same period.

RIM teases first official BlackBerry 10 device image

RIM has already said it will officially unveil BlackBerry 10 at the end of January 2013, but apparently the company just can’t wait until then and is now teasing us with what looks like the first official image of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 phone.

The device you are seeing above seems to be the BlackBerry London, the all-touch device that the company will first release around February. RIM is also expected to bring a traditional, Bold-like BlackBerry with a physical keyboard.

On the image of the upcoming London above you can clearly see the camera and the flash, along with the huge BlackBerry logo in the bottom.

"Re-designed. Re-engineered. Re-invented." That’s what RIM is promising us with the big BlackBerry 10, but we are yet to see how the new platform will fit in the Android-iOS duopoly that the market has become.

RIM CEO Heins: One minute sales pitch is all that is needed to snag BlackBerry 10 buyers

Now that a date has been given for the launch of BlackBerry 10, it is up to CEO Thorsten Heins to sell the last chance BlackBerry has to the public via the media. With this in mind, the boyish looking CEO paid a visit to the New York Times. Discussing RIM's all or nothing bet on BlackBerry 10, he says that he doesn't expect "things to get much worse,"  which could be a relief for long-suffering BlackBerry fans and RIM stockholders. As expected, there is nothing different in the hardware other than the lack of a home button and the inclusion of an LED light that alerts you to notifications. There will also be a model with a physical QWERTY.

Discussing the lack of a home button on the BlackBerry 10 handsets, Heins points out that Android and iOS devices need the button because users need to switch to different apps when performing different tasks. BlackBerry 10 consolidates part of the information that separate apps carry on other operating systems. For example, BlackBerry 10's messaging center can display emails, Facebook updates, LinkedIn messages, texts and tweets. This allows BB10 users to reply to a Facebook post with a quick thumb click, without opening the Facebook app. Additionally, going through one's contacts can show off recent email sent by that person along with news about the contact's company.

While it might sound complicated to some, Heins says that the whole OS can be explained with a sales pitch of less than a minute. Also at the meeting with the Times was RIM’s chief marketing officer, Frank Boulben, who made it clear that RIM is counting on getting business from Corporate IT departments like in the old days. Bouldben said that only half of companies are allowing employees to select their own smartphone models. Bouldben also sees the trend toward returning to the old days when corporate IT departments decided on which phones a company would offer to employees. He sees this happening as a way for companies to save money on tech support costs. And whether or not RIM's CMO is just not being honest with himself, it is apparent that RIM once again is counting on corporate business.

To allow employees of a company to use the same smartphone for work and play, BlackBerry 10 will allow companies to separate personal apps and content from the company's information. This way, if some one quits or is fired, the corporate content can be wiped leaving personal pictures, contacts, etc. Heins predicts that in three to five years, no one will carry laptops as all the computing power needed will be on a smartphone, preferably a BlackBerry.

First BlackBerry 10 smartphones to be released a month after the platform's announcement

Yep, it's like having a ferrari to go to work around the corner, it's just too much.

Dual-Cores is the standard, they should make duals since their devices wont require much power (I believe).

Anyway, they should keep up with the competition, they should make business AND casual/geek/whatever phones.

business phones who doesn't require much camera mp, should be like 3.2mp with lower screen resolution and casual/geek/whatever phones, should have at least 8mp with 1080p screen resolution. Something like that.

BlackBerry 10 SDK arriving to developers on December 11th, two months before first devices launch in Feb 2013

RIM is getting ready for its big BlackBerry 10 launch, and it will launch the BB10 Gold SDK for developers on December 11th. This will give developers around two months to bring their newest apps until the first devices arrive. Devs will get an early SDK release with important fixes so they have even more time up front.

Research in Motion is holding its BlackBerry 10 launch on January 30th, and will initially introduce two devices, one typical ‘Berry with a keyboard, and another, modern touchscreen phone.

Here are the six dates RIM has highlighted in its latest announcement:

November 29 – BlackBerry 10 SDK update.November 29-30 – BlackBerry Jam Asia (in Bangkok, Thailand).December 11 – BlackBerry 10 Gold SDK launch.January 21 – Deadline to have apps submitted to the BlackBerry App World storefront for the 10k Developer Commitment where we guarantee $10,000 USD revenue in the first year.January 30 – BlackBerry 10 launch events.February 5-6 – BlackBerry Jam Europe (in Amsterdam).
Two months sounds like just enough time for committed ‘Berry developers, but it would be challenging for RIM to convince developers on other platforms to switch. We’ll soon learn how well the company did.
