Voda warns iPhone 4S users against iOS 6.1 upgrade

Voda warns iPhone 4S users against iOS 6.1 upgrade

Operator advises users to delay from installing the update because of problems with calls, texts and browsing the internet

Vodafone has warned people using the Apple iPhone 4S not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 because of reported 3G problems.

The operator said the upgrade to the latest version of Apple’s operating system affects 3G performance, with some customers having difficulty making or receiving calls or texts, as well as connecting to the internet.

Users have also written posts on Apple’s support forums complaining of a rapid reduction in battery life when upgrading to iOS 6.1, but others have said that restoring the smartphone using iTunes solves the problem.

A Vodafone spokesperson said: “We’re aware of an issue caused by Apple iPhone 4s handsets that have been upgraded to iOS 6.1 which impacts performance on 3G. Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the internet.

“Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent. While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that the problem has been fixed.”

The operator also sent a text message to users of the smartphone over the weekend that read: “If you’ve not already downloaded iOS 6.1 for your iPhone 4s, please hold off for the next version while Apple fixes 3G performance issues. Thanks.”

Apple is yet to comment on the reported 3G problems or battery life issues.

The manufacturer made iOS 6.1 available on January 28. It has started sending out the next update, iOS 6.1.1, to developers.

Cook says there is room for more Apple iPhone growth

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that despite the wide spread availability of the Apple iPhone, there is plenty of room for growth. "It may surprise you, but iPhone is only available to about 50-percent of the subscribers in the world," said the executive.

Cook pointed out China as one area where the Apple iPhone has made some great strides, but has a long way to go. In other emerging markets, the device faces competition from cheaper Android models, which makes us wonder if Cook's comments are being done to plant the seeds for a cheaper version of the iPhone, expected to be made of plastic and launched this year at a price of $250-$300 off contract.

Award-Winning – From Cheese: Available For iPhone, iPad and Mac

Benevento, Italy – SpinVector, the Italian developer behind the critically acclaimed, multiple award-winning Bang! the Official Videogame and AXL: Full Boost broadens its presence on the mobile market with From Cheese 1.3.0, a game about the struggle of a chubby mouse to save its starving colony from the cruel intentions of a mad-scientist kid.

The game is now available on the App Store (iPhone and iPad universal) and the Mac App Store. Grand Prize-winning From Cheese is a super-cute game with a unique, reverse logic gameplay: the player draws a scent-trail from a piece of cheese to a chubby mouse, then the mouse will smell the trail and follow it all the way backwards to the cheese.

The game is so easy to learn that it doesn’t even feature any explanatory text: you use your finger (or pointer) to draw the path from the cheese, then press the “play” button and the mouse starts following the trail from its end: so, if there’s a door that is opened by a button, the mouse must walk over the button and then through the door; but this means that the player will have to draw the path through the door first, then over the button, because the mouse will start from the other end of the trail.

This clever, award-winning gameplay gets very complex as new elements are added to the mazes: vacuum cleaners that will suck the trail, angry cats that will jump above walls, barking dogs able to “freeze” the cats and evil rats trying to pursue the same cheese you desperately need.

An exclusive feature for a puzzler is the continuous undo system: when you draw the scent-trail, you use a certain amount of “scent” that is shown in a “scent-bar” – simply drag your finger (or pointer) along the bar to pin-point your undo at any given particle of the trail. Smart and comfy.

With 50+ mind-twisting levels, nicely drawn interludes and a jazzy soundtrack, From Cheese is ready-fun for any player: casual gamers will enjoy the quick play; experienced puzzler will need all their efforts to try and get the three stars and the golden clock in all levels.

“I’m amazed by the results we’ve got in terms of awards, critics and, more importantly, user-reviews for our games.” said Giovanni Caturano, CEO of SpinVector and From Cheese designer “it’s a tremendous thrust to push forward, improve our existing titles and make better and better games to match the players request for innovative and satisfying gaming experiences. Thanks to the hundreds of thousands of gamers who enjoy our games!”

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Spigen iPhone 5 Ultra Flip Case hands-on

Expanding their line of cases for the iPhone 5, which is quite extensive right now to say the least, Spigen is now offering owners something similar to the flip covers that have been featured with Sammy’s line of smartphones of late. With the Spigen iPhone 5 Ultra Flip Case, you get that professional look to make you seem all business savvy from afar.

So what’s to like about this one? For starters, the case employs a two-tone diagonal stripe pattern that has a plasticy feel and a clean finish. It’s not bulky at all, thankfully enough, but it would’ve been nice to have some kind of magnetic connection or a latch to secure the front cover when it’s close. Instead, it simply dangles if you don’t clasp the handset with your own hands.

Regardless of that, we appreciate that there’s a slit in the front cover so there’s no interfering with phone calls. On top of that, the inner portion of the front cover is lined with soft micro fiber chamude so that it protects (and cleans) the display. Interestingly enough, there’s a slit also running down the inner cover as well, which seems as though it can accommodate a card of some kind – whether it’s a credit card or ID.

Naturally, not everyone is going to want a flip cover with their iPhone 5, but if you do, the Spigen Ultra Flip Case for the iPhone 5 is something to think about – though, its $37.99 price might be steep for some people.

Upcoming Mailbox app for iPhone will have a waitlist due to huge demand

By looking at email as an “ancient” medium, Orchestra is just about to transform how we use email with a highly anticipated app.

You may have heard of Orchestra, Inc. They are the developers behind the highly rated “Orchestra To-do” app for the iPhone. The story behind that application grew from the company’s observations that many of us use our email as to-do lists. The problem is that most email interfaces, especially the ones on smartphones, are not very good at organizing or being to-do lists.

The company embarked on transforming the medium of email into something far more useful, and from the looks of what has been worked on, Mailbox is going to be a runaway success. It is a mobile-first email experience, rather than a desktop experience on a handset. When you see the video below, you will understand. Mailbox will be available for the iPhone and Gmail “soon.”

Response to this concept has been overwhelming, as a result, the company has set-up a reservation system so Orchestra can scale the rollout without “because this is email and email has to be reliable.” To achieve this, the reservation system Orchestra has set up is really simple, just provide your phone number and the company will text you a reservation number and you will be notified when you can begin using the Mailbox application.

Mailbox compresses data and is said to provide super-quick push notifications as well as make it easier to actually clear out all your email. You can reserve your space in line through the source link below. When was the last time your email inbox was empty?

Best Android, iPhone and iPad apps of 2012: best shooters and combat games

2012 was a great year for apps. Apple’s App Store accumulated more than 775,000 apps and Android’s Google Play was on par with similar numbers, but in that deep forest of applications, it’s sometimes hard to find your way.

That’s why we are hand-picking the best software of the year, the best games and the best apps. After bringing you the best Android and iOS puzzle games, we continue with something a bit more lively, something for the adrenaline-seeking, the aggressive kind - ladies and gents, the best shooters and combat games of the year.

If last year we were still not convinced we’ve reached console quality on our mobile devices, this year it’s clear that devices have finally grown to a level of maturity that allows for no-compromise graphics and gameplay. Analyst cites survey showing shift in Apple iPhone buying patterns in cutting earnings estimates

According to a survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, a significant change in Apple iPhone buying patterns is taking place. While buyers of the Apple iPhone 4S averaged 30GB of storage, buyers of the Apple iPhone 5 are averaging 20GB of storage with fewer buyers selecting the 64GB model. In addition, demand for older models is now 50% during the Apple iPhone 5 cycle, compared with 33% during the cycle of the Apple 4S. This shift to lower priced, lower storage versions of Apple's iconic smartphone have led at least one analyst to cut his earnings estimates for Apple.

UBS analyst Steven Milunovich says that this shift to lower priced units combined with higher launch costs could cost Apple a reduction of 8 to 10 percentage points in gross margin in fiscal year 2013. As a result, the analyst now expects fiscal year 2013 profit of $44.68 a share, down from $47 previously estimated. For fiscal year 2014, he sees Apple reporting profit of $52.80 a share, down from his earlier forecast of $55.85 a share. Milunovich has cut his target on Apple's stock to $650 from $700 while keeping his "Buy" rating on the shares.

Milunovich see's a 2% to 6% drop in the phone's average selling price over the next three quarters, reducing his gross margin forecast by 1% over fiscal year 2013. His buy rating is based on a positive risk/reward ratio at current prices. He sees strong growth, a deal with China Mobile by the fourth quarter, and too much pessimism about Apple losing its edge in innovation, pushing the stock higher.

ZooGue iPhone Social Case Pro hands-on

Not everyone is all about unloading a fortune for some kind of fancy and stylish case for the iPhone, and instead, they merely want something else that’ll cost them as little as possible – while still offering some sort of protection. Well, if you’re looking for just that, then the ZooGue Social Case Pro for the iPhone just might be what you’re looking for.

When it comes down to it, the ZooGue Social Case Pro (for the iPhone 4/4S/5) is an inexpensively priced tough case that’ll give some level of protection, but not to the point it’ll save it from severe drops. Just looking at them, they’re not brandishing any sort of style that would catch the eyes of bystanders. However, we do like how the thermoplastic polyurethane case manages to protect the smartphone from minor scratches and smudges – and maintains a very clean appearance. Furthermore, the thickness of the ZooGue Social Case Pro guards it from minor impacts too.

With its ridged sides, we like how it’s easily gripped in the hand and how it offers a very natural feel, which is aided by its rubbery like finish. And of course, there’s plenty of variety seeing that the case is available in 10 different colors. However, as we’ve clearly pointed out, there’s nothing too flashy with the looks of the ZooGue Social Case Pro. Rather, it’s the protection and $9.99 cost of the case that might attract some people to it.

Mr. Cond 2 for iPhone Adds More Fun to Mobile Gaming

Las Vegas, Nevada – On the heels of the huge success of the original Mr. Cond app, 7bit LLC is thrilled to announce that the recently released Mr. Cond 2 v.1.3.1 for iPhone and iPod touch – available now at the App Store (Games) for $0.99 – delivers more excitement, features, and fun than the first version of Mr. Cond, which received over three millions downloads from the App Store. Mr. Cond 2 – unique in that it works to promote safe sex, in the form of a fun and challenging game – features wholly refreshed graphics, catchy new music, and improved gameplay; making it one of the most refreshing and unique apps available for those ages 17-and-up.

Mr. Cond 2 was developed by Las Vegas-based 7bit LLC to introduce a mobile application that could – while first and foremost delivering an engaging and challenging gameplay experience – also work to promote proper condom utility, by visually demonstrating the potential dangers of unprotected sex. To that end, Mr. Cond 2 – developed with social networks support and integration, and now outfitted with simpler controls – features a host of remarkable, animated condoms (the good guys), bacteria (the bad guys), and backgrounds all captured in amazing 960*640 resolution. The result is a game that is fun and fresh, while still serving a purpose.

“Our intent with the original Mr. Cond was to make a fun and accessible app that could double as a vehicle for affecting a positive change – and, considering that the first version was downloaded over three million times, we feel like we certainly accomplished our mission of spreading awareness regarding the importance of safe sex,” said Nikolay Golyash, the president of 7bit LLC. “With Mr. Cond 2 we’ve worked really hard to retain that same unique Mr. Cond feel, while making significant upgrades in terms of graphic art and imagery, gameplay function, and the audial experience. We also thought it would be dynamic to include social network integration – in this way users can now band together to promote the game; and, thus, the importance of safe sex.”

Golyash noted that, aside from improved graphic detail, there are several new upgrades to Mr. Cond 2. Other new features have been included into the new version of Mr. Cond, such as the addition of multiple gameplay levels and all-new functions – such as a Game Center and a leaderboard – in which users can more easily and conveniently interact, interface, and promote their high scores.

Feature Highlights:
* Enhanced graphics
* Colorful animated backgrounds, characters
* Stunning 960*640 resolution
* Improved controls function
* Multi-level gameplay
* Social networks support and integration (Facebook/Twitter)
* Game Center/leaderboard feature

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks to the Apple iPhone 5, Apple had 53.3% of U.S. smartphone sales in late November

According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, sales of the Apple iPhone 5 were strong enough over the 12 weeks through November 25th to propel the Cupertino based firm's share of the U.S. smartphone market to 53.3% The Apple iPhone 5 and its larger 4 inch screen (up from 3.5 inches on previous models) had been taking business away from Android in the States as Apple showed a year-over-year rise of 17.5% over that three month period vs. a drop of 10.9% for the green robot. Also hit hard by the strength of Apple iPhone 5 sales during the same period was RIM. For the 12 weeks ended November 25th, the U.S. market share for BlackBerry branded handsets had slumped dramatically to 1.4% from 7% the previous year. The loss in market share for Android and RIM during the period accounts for all of Apple's pick up in market share during the same time. A large percentage of BlackBerry users have decided to move on rather than wait for the introduction of BlackBerry 10 next month.

As the 2012 holiday shopping season winds down, Kantar sees Apple scoring further gains. The firm did point out that Apple's leading position in the U.S. smartphone market doesn't carry over to Europe. In the "big five" European countries, Samsung has a combined 44.3% market share followed by Apple's 25.3%

App for jailbroken iPhone gives a great look and function for iOS app switcher

What started as a concept to create an environment which improves the app switching experience or multitasking view in iOS is now on the crux of becoming reality.

This app is called Auxo, and it completely redesigns the view when using the switcher. This app, which will require a jailbroken iPhone, really shows a great execution of what would be a welcome improvement to a future “official” version of iOS (maybe iOS 7).

Swiping to the reveal the audio controls provides neat functionality of volume and viewing the album art. Swipe further and you are presented with toggle controls for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and more, plus there is a brightness slider. The latter of which is only accessible by digging into settings. The toggles allow direct access to the settings by simply selecting and holding that toggle. Plus, the toggles can be rearranged.

In the app preview, or multi-tasking tray, in lieu of app logos, you have a card view showing the state of each app. It is a feature that is obviously borrowed from webOS, but nicely executed. The gestures are multi-touch enabled too.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, this app will be available in Cydia soon. It will only work on iOS 6 devices for now. Pricing for the feature is not known either. With this kind of talent working in the “shadows” of the jailbreak environment, one can see what can be accomplished with the iOS platform. Given that, by showing what can be done, great looking features like this do play against the age of the overall user experience of iOS.

Samsung sues Apple in Korea over Apple iPhone Notification Center

When Apple launched a Notification Center in iOS 5, the feeling was that it was just a matter of time before Google took Apple to court. Well, as it turns out, it isn't Google but is Samsung that is finally taking Apple to court over the feature. Samsung, based in Korea, has the home court advantage with its filing in the country. Unlike some of the other patents being defended in courtroom battles globally, this would not appear to be a standards-essential patent which means that Sammy could be in for a big pay day.

It is unknown whether Samsung is defending a patent it had received or whether it has enhanced an existing patent that some other company received before Apple launched its Notification Center. And that is the billion dollar question because Samsung cannot sue for something Google patented. Google recently received a Patent in the U.S. for the Android Notifications Center, but technically, Samsung cannot use that to sue Apple unless it was enhanced by Samsung or if it was sold to Samsung by Google.

Apple launched its Notification Center in 2011 for iOS 5 well after Android models had been shipping with a similar feature. The Notification Center on the Apple iPhone allows the user to drag down a screen that shows emails, texts and weather. Even the most die-hard Apple fan has to concede that Apple's legal team has its work cut out with this suit.

Keep your iPhone running sharp with SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard for iOS

New York, New York – AppHome, an emerging mobile solutions and productivity applications developer, is excited today to announce the recent launch of SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard onto the App Store. SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard is currently available for download in the App Store’s Paid Utilities category.

Knowledge is power, its that simple. This elegantly effective mobile tool gives users just that. Knowledge of how their iOS device is running, how its utilizing its power and computing capabilities, in turn giving them the power to adapt and use it in ways geared to unlock its full potential. SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard’s dedicated usage monitoring modules make everything available to users for review at a glance, and with 6 uniquely categorized modules included – Battery, Memory, CPU & Processes, Disk, Network, and General – every component of their iOS device is covered.

It’s all presented via an interface that takes seconds to breeze through, complete with graphs to help it all sink in seamlessly. Don’t let your iPhone or iPad get cumbersome, get yourself back in the drivers seat with the help of SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard for iOS.
