AT&T's 4G LTE signal now covers more than 150 million Americans

AT&T crews had a busy week, lighting up 24 new markets with its 4G LTE signal. Major markets like Denver, Colorado; Louisville, Kentucky; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Daytona Beach and Pensacola, Florida now offer data speeds as much as ten times faster than 3G speeds. Smaller markets that now receive AT&T's 4G LTE signal include Twin Cities, Minnesota; Provo, Utah; York, Pennsylvania; Anne Arundel County, near Annapolis, Maryland; and Fairfield County near Danbury, Connecticut. All together, 150 million people can now access AT&T 4G LTE and that is twice the number that could access the carrier's speediest service last year. By the end of next year, that figure is expected to rise to 250 million people and hit 300 million people by 2015. As of today, the mobile operator covers 103 markets with LTE.

AT&T continues to trail Verizon in the number of markets it covers with LTE. Big Red's 4G LTE signal reaches into 440 markets, covering more than 250 million people although the carrier did have a huge head start. AT&T does have a comfortable lead over Sprint. That carrier just started building out its LTE pipeline in June.

Samsung shows interest in Apple's deal with HTC

Last weekend, Apple and HTC announced that they had reached agreement on a ten-year pact that involves cross-licensing patents, and the immediate halting of patent litigation between the two. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, the Wall Street Journal reported that HTC was to pay Apple as part of the agreement. Apple's main rival, Samsung, is interested in taking a look at the agreement that Apple signed with HTC. Samsung wants to know if two of the patents involved in its battle with the Cupertino crew, '381 and '915 are part of the licensing agreement with HTC. The '381 has to do with the bounce-back effect and the '915 deals with scrolling and zooming. Samsung also wants to know if there are patents that Apple tossed into the agreement that it doesn't license to other firms. Apple patent licensing director Boris Teksler calls those rarely made-available parts of Apple's IP portfolio as the "untouchables".
Samsung has asked the court to make a ruling on whether it can obtain a copy of the document by November 27th. There is some speculation that Samsung and Apple will eventually reach a settlement of their own. A judge has just allowed both tech giants to add each other's newest flagship smartphones to their second patent battle in San Jose while a post-trial hearing is scheduled for December 6th on issues pertaining to the first trial. Samsung seeks a new trial while Apple wants a permanent injunction placed on eight Samsung models.

MetroPCS expects stockholders to approve T-Mobile deal at meeting in February or March

MetroPCS CFO Braxton Carter told a Morgan Stanley investor conference on Friday that the company had spoken with several other potential suitors, but is now firmly 100% behind the deal it has inked with T-Mobile.The combination of the nation's fourth and fifth largest carriers should strengthen T-Mobile and make them a more viable challenger in the industry. Carter also said that the combined company will outperform some of its earlier estimates for profit margins thanks to savings between the two firms and MetroPCS' expansion into new parts of the country. Carter added that he believes that MetroPCS shareholders, who by law need to approve the deal, are behind the acquisition. Both firms filed proxy statements with the SEC on Friday to get the votes of their respective shareholders on the deal. MetroPCS is expected to hold its shareholder vote for February or March.

Last year, Sprint and its CEO Dan Hesse were said to have agreed on an $8 billion buy out of MetroPCS only to have Sprint's board reject the deal. Both T-Mobile and MetroPCS' boards have agreed to the current acquisition leaving stockholders and regulators left to sign off on the deal.

A vision for Google Wireless and the troubles it would face

All I heard was Android experience free from carrier bloat and no contract! If Google can actually get this off the ground, we can finally buy whatever phone you like and bring it to their network, something that Google has been keen on doing since the inception of the Nexus devices. There will be some serious opposition from VZW, AT&T, Sprint and the like because of Googles all encompassing reach, but hey competition is competition as long as it plays by the rules the Government sets forth. I see problems in China though, no two ways about that right there.

Dreaming of low cost cell service on a phone I chose because it fit what I wanted instead of having to choose phone by carrier. OEM would just have to make a phone that is compatible with world standards. One thing how is it LTE radios aren't able to just switch channels within the same band? Technology reaches this far, yet we have radios in cell phones that can't do multiple bands, that is mind boggling. Hope Qualcomm and Broadcom are up to the task of building baseband radios that can switch with a simple software update.

Microsoft updates SkyDrive for Android, microSD card file uploads now supported

A bigger and bigger part of our digital lifestyles is being moved to the cloud - that cannot be denied. And with the cloud becoming an integral part of an ever-increasing number of applications and services, you can hardly find a big enterprise nowadays that isn't offering some form of cloud storage service.

Never wanting to be left out of the game, Microsoft is already a prominent player in this space through its SkyDrive service. If you are hearing about SkyDrive for the first time - well, it's basically a cloud storage service, offering you the decent amount of 7 GB for free.

The news is that the Android SkyDrive client has just graduated to version 1.1. Probably the most important new functionality it brings is that it now allows you to upload files directly from you microSD card, without having to move them to the internal storage first. Microsoft has also added some new settings dealing with photo uploads and download size, and on top of that the graphical user interface of the app has also been refreshed.

So, if you happen to be a SkyDrive user with an Android device - why don't you head to the PlayStore and get your update!

Future Snapdragon chips might come with ultrasound for future touch-free gesture interfaces

Qualcomm has just acquired EPOS Development, a company known for working on ultrasound technologies, and it confirmed that future Snapdragon chips will use the company’s insight. The Snapdragon chip is common on Android, and it is the one chip powering all Windows Phone devices.

Epos’ technology could be used for stylus and gesture recognition, and possibly even move away from the now dominant touch interfaces.

Here is a short description of the technology by the Israeli EPOC itself:

What this means is that the ultrasound technologies works in three dimensions, both on the display and off of it. Thus, you could just use gestures in the air to control the device.

To give the new technology a boost in consumer electronics and the educational and enterprise markets, Qualcomm will provide stylus reference designs.

EPOS is a hint of what’s to come eventually after touchscreens. Touch-free and pen interactions a la Minority Report might not come en masse next year, but the technology is definitely already there. And given the fact that Qualcomm recently surpassed Intel in its market value, we could well see this kind of innovation from it.

Press Release
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today announced that it has acquired certain assets of EPOS Development, Ltd. (EPOS), a leading developer of ultrasound technologies for input solutions, including pen, stylus and gesture recognition. The company, based in Hod Hasharon, Israel, has developed digital positioning technology that enables device manufacturers to integrate advanced user input capabilities into a wide range of consumer devices.
“As computing evolves beyond the PC, consumers are looking for intuitive new ways to interact with their mobile devices,” said Raj Talluri, senior vice president, product management, QTI. “EPOS’ technology goes beyond the PC-era mouse and keyboard and enables touch-free gesture and pen interactions as user input mechanisms. Enabling this technology on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor will allow devices that accommodate a more mobile and multimedia-centric lifestyle.”
The acquired assets will further strengthen and differentiate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, allowing unique and powerful next-generation user experiences for smartphones, tablets and e-readers. EPOS team members who are joining Qualcomm will be integrated into Qualcomm Israel’s R&D team and will be focused on delivering new mobile device and service capabilities.
The EPOS technology is based on the digital transmission of ultrasonic waves, enabling precise tracking by a receiver to enable multiple applications.
“Ultrasound technology provides device manufacturers a low-cost approach for integrating pen and stylus-based user interfaces into their products while gaining the benefit of a slew of new capabilities,” said Oded Turbahn, chief executive officer, EPOS. “Relative to other pen and stylus input solutions, the additional bill of material cost for the device is minimal as the technology does not require changes to the device’s screen and is independent of screen size. The EPOS team is excited about joining Qualcomm in working to further the potential of digital ultrasound.”
EPOS’ ultrasound technology provides a differentiated, high-resolution user experience that works on screen and off screen, as well as in three dimensions. Qualcomm intends to provide digital pen/stylus reference designs to help accelerate adoption of this technology in the consumer, enterprise and education markets.

For those international travelers who want to share their adventures while on the go, AT&T is excited to introduce the new Global Messaging 600 package, which lets customers send 600 text, picture and video messages abroad for $60/month from more than 140 countries.2

The new Global Messaging 600 package, which replaces Global Messaging 500, offers significant savings when compared to international roaming pay-per-use messaging rates, which cost travelers $.50 per message sent for text messages and $1.30 per message sent for picture and video messages. In contrast, with the Global Messaging 600 package, customers just pay $.10 a message-regardless if it's a text, picture or video message.

In addition to the Global Messaging 600 package, AT&T also offers Global Messaging 200 for $30/month and Global Messaging 50 for $10/month.

Google talks with Dish to start its own mobile carrier

And they should rename the phone's tethering app to "G-spot!" On second thought, they might want to pass on that one.

Either way, I am all for your idea. Knowing Google's business model, they'd probably provide excellent service for a lower price than the competition. At worst, it would be superior service at the same price, so I see this as a win-win. Count me in if it ever becomes a thing.

Sharp Aquos SH930W 5-inch 1080p screen compared to One X, Galaxy S III

The Sharp Aquos SH930W might not have the name of a ground-breaking device, but with a 5-inch 1080p display, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a relatively affordable price it should catch your attention.

The Aquos SH930W is among the first devices with 1080p displays, and that’s a feast for your eyes. We have already spoken about the device, but now we have the first reviews coming from Russia where the device should launch in December this year or January 2013.

It is almost impossible to discern pixels on the 5-inch S-CGS Sharp display. Colors are not overblown like on an AMOLED screen, and that’s a big plus.

There are some compromises made, though, as the device undercuts even 720p smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S III. The biggest one is the Snapdragon S3 chip inside this Sharp handset. That is a mismatch for the demanding display and some more demanding games and even 1080p videos stutter slightly.

The price of the device is 22,000 roubles (around $694), less than the 23,000 to 25,000 roubles the Galaxy S III sells for.

And finally, seriously, Sharp, as romantic as SH930W sounds to your ear, you should definitely consider changing those names to something a tiny bit simpler. We even have a couple suggestions: Sharp 5, or Sharp Full HD? For the sake of our sanity.

HTC Deluxe render leaks, showing off global version of the HTC DROID DNA

Thanks to a tweet from evleaks, we have a render of the HTC Deluxe. If the name sounds familiar, it is because at one time, this was the name that was applied to the HTC DROID DNA before the 5 inch phablet was given the scientific moniker by Verizon. And if the picture looks familiar, well, that's because the HTC Deluxe IS the HTC DROID DNA. The only difference is that because of the licensing deal with Lucasfilm, the DROID name can only be used at Verizon. As you might recall, in Japan the device is known as the HTC Butterfly J. No matter what you call it, the phablet offers a 5 inch screen with resolution of 1080 x 1920 resulting in a pixel density of 441ppi. Besides using the HTC Deluxe name overseas, the handset will also be given the name in Canada. It is similar to what Motorola did with the Motorola DROID which was given the Motorola MILESTONE name in other parts of the world.

Can the HTC DROID DNA/Butterfly J/Deluxe give the Samsung GALAXY Note II a run for its money? The pixel density on the latter is a more down to earth 265ppi, but the screen is a half inch larger. In addition, the Samsung GALAXY Note II has a 3100mAh battery compared to the 2020mAh cell on the HTC model, which reminds us of something our Momma once told us. No matter how many pixels per inch your device has, if the battery is dead, the screen is worthless.

Here is what devices CEOs and their employees use

The top management of the company is not quite like everyone else - it dictates the rules, and that’s why it’s very interesting to take a look at what CEOs actually use themselves and is there any difference between that and what their employees have to use.

And the latest survey by CEO.com found some interesting results. Chief executives are nearly all using smartphones and a lot are still using BlackBerries. But while most top managers use iPhones, their organizations have employees using Android the most the iPhone comes only third.

While the notebook is the second most popular gadget with CEOs after the smartphone, the tablet is quickly growing and now nearly 78% of executives use one. Check out the inforgraphic below for some additional interesting details.

Samsung and Apple allowed to add products to lawsuit, such as the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III

U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal is allowing both Apple and Samsung to add products to each side's claims in the second patent trial between both tech titans to be held in San Jose. The first trial resulted in a $1.05 billion verdict in favor of Apple. Post-trial motions will be heard by Judge Lucy Koh on December 6th. This second trial was added by Apple with a filing made last February claiming that certain Samsung smartphones, including the Samsung GALAXY Nexus, violated eight of its patents. Judge Koh issued an injunction against sales of the phone in June, but her actions were considered an abuse of her discretion by a Federal Appeals Court last month and the injunction was overturned. In the second suit, Samsung denied the charges and filed a counterclaim against Apple and its iPhone and iPad, claiming that Apple's iconic devices infringed on eight of its patents. On September 21st, after threatening to do so, Samsung filed to add the Apple iPhone 5 as an Apple device that infringed on one of Samsung's patents. In response, Apple added the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1, the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Android 4.1 operating system to the Samsung GALAXY Nexus with its claim.

In making his ruling to allow Samsung to add the latest Apple iPhone model to the suit, Judge Grewal said Samsung acted with "reasonable diligence" in requesting that the court add the phone to its claim. Even though Apple did not oppose the addition of the Apple iPhone 5 to the case, Judge Grewal  told Apple's lawyers to "think twice before opposing similar amendments reflecting other newly released products — e.g. the iPad 4 and iPad mini — that Samsung may propose in the near future."

First images of Huawei Ascend W2 surface, another high-class Windows Phone

The Huawei Ascend W2 has just leaked out and it follows in the footsteps of HTC and Nokia who each have one lower and one higher end Windows Phone 8 device. We have already seen the Huawei Ascend W1, the company’s affordable device, and this here Ascend W2 will hit the high-end market.

There is only a few things we know about the Huawei Ascend W2, though. First, it’s got an 8-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash. There is obviously a front-facing shooter as well.

Chances are we will get to see it soon, though. Huawei’s Windows Phone lineup will probably get unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, NV in January 2013.

We know that the more affordable Ascend W1 will cost around $300 at launch, so this here should much more expensive.

16GB Google Nexus 10 joins the other sell outs in the Google Play Store

What did you expect? With that luscious 2560 x 1600 display and 300ppi pixel density, how could both versions of the Google Nexus 10 not sell out? The 16GB model of the tablet is now all sold out, as is the 32GB version as well. Did someone say the economy is still doing poorly? And wait, there's more. Of course, the Google Nexus 4 sold out on the Google Play Store shortly after being offered on Tuesday, (although a trip to the right T-Mobile store could help you here, that is if you don't mind paying $150 more for the same phone) and the HSPA+ variant of the Google Nexus 7 is also out of stock.

If only producing these phones and tablets were as easy as having a shack full of Keebler elves. In the meantime, there is still the 16GB and 32GB versions of the Google Nexus 7 left with inventory along with the $199 Acer Chromebook

Some of those who ordered the Google Nexus 4 received an email on Thursday, telling them that the device is on backorder and could ship sometime in the next 3 weeks.

AT&T sells out of cyan, red and yellow Lumia 920, there are still some black and white ones though

Who said Nokia's in a bad shape? Well, OK, they may not be exactly... fine right now, but if they can keep those innovations coming, who knows, maybe we'll soon see a comeback!

At least, that is the impression we get observing the current Nokia Lumia 920 stock at AT&T, which is almost nonexistent. As a matter of fact, it seems AT&T has already sold out of the more colorful versions of the handset - the cyan, red and yellow one, and is now left with black and white Lumia 920s only. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that people are buying those colorful Lumias like crazy, it may just be that AT&T has kept fewer of those in stock. Still, it is undeniable that any handset that has the label "Sold out" attached to it has something going for it.

The good thing is that it's still early to start panicking, as those who want to get a taste of that floating PureView camera and brilliant 4.5" ClearBlack screen can still do so, albeit in black or white only. Have you gotten your Lumia 920 yet? Which color do you prefer?

Homeless man charges his phone in the park and gets busted

Darren Kersey, 28, is homeless. But last Sunday, Kersey had a home for the night-a jail in Sarasota. He wound up at that location when he was spotted by Sarasota Police Sgt. Anthony Frangioni charging his cellphone at a public picnic shelter at the city's Gillespie Park. In his report, Sgt. Frangioni, who has put in 14 years with the Sarasota Police Department wrote "theft of city utilities will not be tolerated during this bad economy." He also admonished the man and told him to charge his phone at local shelters.

While it is not known what model phone Kersey has, it only takes all of 41 cents in electricity to charge an Apple iPhone for a year. It costs many times that figure to house a man in jail for a night and prosecute him. While that makes all the sense in the world, the judge threw out the case on Monday morning for a different reason saying that the office had no justification to make the arrest in the first place.

By Monday morning, there were eight homeless people in the park, including two who were charging their phones in the same location where Kersey was arrested. We guess that John Lennon had it right when he sang "Power to the People".

Sony getting ready to release new Android flagship that will directly rival iPhone 5, Galaxy S III

Sony might have lost its positions in the smartphone market, but it’s confident that it will regain them and will do so by launching a smartphone that would give the new iPhone and Galaxy S a run for the money.

“We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” Sony CVP of Sales & Marketing, Dennis van Schie, said.

Could van Schie be talking about the rumored upcoming Sony Yuga? Our guess is yes. We have heard that the Sony Yuga will sport a 5-inch 1080p display, most likely run on a quad-core Snapdragon S4, feature 2GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel camera.

What’s more, this phone could turn out to be water and dust resistant with IP57 certification. It is expected to run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and come with on-screen buttons, a departure from the usual layout for Sony devices.

On the tablet side of things, Sony will stay at it even though it admits it’s now very hard to eke out profit out of tablets.

“We will bring in addition to the existing Xperia Tablet other Android tablets to the market, but not many,” said Van Schie. That focus on quality, not quantity can only be welcomed.

Finally, Sony admits it is not planning any Windows Phone devices in the very short term, but keeps a close watch on the platform to see if it manages to lift off.

We could not blame them for that - after all latest research showed that even Samsung’s bada and Symbian still outsell Windows Phone. But that juicy new flagship definitely sounds promising, what do you think?

Shadowgun: DeadZone - let the console-quality multiplayer mayhem begin! (review)

If you play games on your smartphone, then you've probably heard of Shadowgun - a third-person shooter with beautiful graphics and gameplay that's actually worth playing. It was the first mobile game to take advantage of the cross-platform Unity engine, and it showed. Shadowgun looked arguably better than all similar games out there, including Gameloft's renowned titles like N.O.V.A.

Now the same dev studio Madfinger Games, which made a name for itself after a small app piracy scandal, is bringing us a new game from the same series, called Shadowgun: DeadZone. What's so important about it? Well, it's got multiplayer. Console-quality multiplayer!

In fact, Shadowgun: DeadZone is a multiplayer-only game, which allows you to battle it out against other players from around the world. The game keeps the same third-person view, with the camera trailing behind your character, and you can even use the cover system that was present in the first game, which makes things a lot more interesting. There are to modes: Deathmatch and Zone Control. The first one doesn't need explanation, while the second one is team-based, with a few control points scattered around the map. You and your teammates have to stay in close proximity of the points in order to control them and win points. We like both modes, and since the game is so new, you don't need to worry about server population.

Graphics-wise, DeadZone is among the very best looking-games right now. Madfiner Games stay true to their techy style of dimly-lit areas with a lot of additional effects like smoke and lens flares. Overall, the visuals are a pleasure to behold and among the strongest assets of the game. That is, in case you have a powerful phone that can run it on high or very high details. It it ran just fine on the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5, but struggled greatly (read: was unplayable) on an iPhone 4. You should be able to get decent frame-rates on anything in between, as long as you don't pump the graphics up too much.

There are some additional features to keep you interested like unlockable characters, weapons, items and a whole bunch of other stuff. This happens by spending money which you win in the game, but of course, you can get additional funds with an in-app purchase. There is a great diversity of characters, weapons and items so you'll definitely have a reason to continue playing.

There are two major problems we have with Shadowgun: DeadZone right now. The first one is the controls, and we actually have this problem with pretty much any other real-time action game that uses a virtual joystick and action keys. Playing such a game on a touchscreen is a pain in the neck (and in other places as well), which is a shame, because this is a game that can be tons of fun if it could just be played comfortably. Mirroring the display to an HDTV and pairing a controller is highly recommended!

The other issue we have is that the game seems to be a bit buggy right now. For example, finding a suitable match happens very quickly, but we often found the game stuck while trying to join a match. Reinitializing your attempt to join a game one or two times usually solves this. But there are also other instances where we just had to end-task DeadZone in order to get ourselves out of an endless map flyby or some other screen.

All in all, however, these issues cannot really ruin the perfect impression that this game makes. If there's really such a thing like console-quality gaming on a mobile handset, then Shadowgun: DeadZone is the closest you can get. What's even cooler is that it costs you practically nothing - the game can be played for free, and it's entirely up to you if you want to purchase any additional items.

Are you still here? What are you waiting for? Go get DeadZone and enter the multiplayer mayhem!

LG Optimus G vs Samsung Galaxy S III: screen comparison

This story is sponsored by LG. PhoneArena's opinions in this article have not been affected in any way!

One of the things that can make or break the experience of using a smartphone nowadays is the screen, and these tend to come in many different kinds and implementations, as manufacturers try to come up with something new and unique for their handsets. Interestingly, screen technology also happens to be one of the major differentiating factors between two of the very best Android handsets right now - the LG Optimus G and the Samsung Galaxy S III. With the former using an advanced kind of LCD technology called True HD IPS Plus, and the latter - the so-called Super AMOLED, it is clear that what we're dealing with here are two exceptionally potent screens. With that in mind, we think it's completely possible to discover which one is the better of the two if we take the time to examine them closely. Let's do so right now!

Outdoor visibility

Let's start by checking how these guys fare when taken outdoors, where most handsets usually struggle to offer an easily viewable image. Taking advantage of its True HD IPS Plus display technology, the LG Optimus G is capable of producing some very high brightness levels, which don't seem to be within the reach of the GS III's Super AMOLED panel.

That doesn't mean that the Galaxy S III is hard to read when you're out and about. It actually performs well in this department, but when directly compared to LG's offering, it's visibly more washed out.

Colors

AMOLED displays, like the one of the Galaxy S III, are known for their very saturated and unrealistic colors. They happen to be far from natural for two reasons. The first is their already mentioned tendency to appear oversaturated, and the second is the AMOLED screens' cold color temperature - something they have been unable to escape from to this day. The Galaxy S III is not an exception. When you put it next to a quality IPS screen like the one of the Optimus G, you immediately notice that the white on the GS III's screen is actually bluish, while the Optimus G display is much closer to the real thing.

Of course, the same observations are valid for all colors, not just for the "whites". This is one area where IPS LCD screens have remained unbeatable. Sure, if you're only staring at the Super AMOLED panel of a Galaxy S III, you may even fail to notice the inaccurate temperature of the colors, and you might even like it this way, but it'll quickly become obvious that the Optimus G's IPS display produces the more accurate picture once you take a look at it.

Resolution

On paper, both handsets are almost equal in terms of resolution, or pixel density. However, there is an important difference, which makes the display of the LG Optimus G the better one in this category. While the GS III uses a PenTile pixel arrangement, the Optimus G sticks to a traditional RGB matrix. In short, equally sized displays of the same resolution would look better with an RGB matrix, because they'll have more subpixels. The result of this is that RGB displays appear finer and smoother, with less fuzziness. Both the LG Optimus G and Samsung Galaxy S III perform very well here, due to their high resolutions, but the Optimus G does have the upper hand, as its RGB matrix helps it achieve some cleaner-looking details compared to the GS III.

The main activities that benefit from this have to do with reading text. If you're working with documents, reading ebooks, or simply web browsing, you'll surely appreciate the more detailed display of the Optimus G. Other things, like watching video or viewing pics, don't suffer that much from the PenTile display.

Viewing angles

Traditionally strong in the viewing angles department, AMOLED screens have recently been losing their lead to the highest-quality IPS screens. Such is the case with the Galaxy S III and Optimus G. Although the GS III manages to retain relatively good contrast levels as you start tilting the screen to various sides, we don't like how quickly the panel starts shifting its colors, becoming quite bluish in the process. Meanwhile, the True HD IPS Plus display of the Optimus G loses some of its contrast, but the image stays pretty much the same, without any serious alterations.

All in all, LG has proven that it's a serious innovator when it comes to display technology. The Optimus G is up there with the very best in this respect, boasting a high-definition screen with nicely saturated (but not too much) and realistic colors, along with reliable outdoor visibility and viewing angles. As good as the Super AMOLED technology of the Galaxy S III is, Samsung will have to think of something better than that if it wants to compete with LG's True HD IPS Plus tech.

Mozilla launches Firefox OS simulator as platform-neutral browser extension

Firefox OS, the HTML-based operating system formerly known as Boot to Gecko, will have a tough time competing with the existing players as even high-profile attempts like Windows Phone are struggling to gain traction. Still, the Mozilla team thinks it is on to something with an OS built around HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and the next generation web.

And now, Firefox OS launches an emulator for developer to test their apps and curious users to look around. It is available as a Firefox extension and it is pretty straightforward to install. The “experimental” simulator runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Once you install the extension, it will stay up to date with the latest Firefox OS developments, so you don’t have to update it to have the current version. It is still version 0.7 and waiting to graduate into version 1.

It’s main goal, of course, is to get developers interested in writing for the platform: “the Firefox OS Simulator is the easiest way to try out Firefox OS apps today and to verify how they’ll look before submitting them to the Marketplace,” a member of the Mozilla team said.

The platform looks fairly conservative and we think that’s more of a good thing. You can check it out in our gallery below or hit the source to install the simulator on your Firefox.

Draw a Stickman debuts on Android: addictive gaming where you draw the world

Games are not all about jaw-dropping graphics and adrenaline-packed shooting. They are also about creativity, non-violent fun and adventure. And Draw a Stickman, the new Android game by Epic brings just that with a twist of surprise in the form of a different gameplay.

Draw a Stickman starts with you drawing a stickman (duh!). What happens next though is a lot of fun. Epic animates your character so it can walk around a virtual drawn world which you change by sketching on top of it. See a wooden door you can’t go through? You just draw a fire and it burns down.

That’s the innovative kind of an adventure game that Draw a Stickman is. You have a free trial on Google Play, but the fool version costing you just a buck comes with 13 different levels. The story revolves around you trying to save your best friend you have just drawn who’s just been eaten by an evil book. Best of all, the gameplay is not linear.

Vodio App Adds New Search and Facebook, Twitter and YouTube Channels

Cupertino, California – Vodio, the personalized video discovery app for iPad and iPhone, announced today the addition of a new search functionality to its top-rated app that allows users to create video channels around any topic that may interest them. Additionally, users can now to convert Facebook or Twitter pages into a video channel, and add video channels directly from YouTube. These updates further expand Vodio’s efforts to become a complete social digest tool by allowing users to add localized content beyond their personal social feeds.

Vodio gives users a one-stop-shop platform on which they can watch, discover, and share videos from across the web. The new updates let social video watchers further customize their app experience to suit their personal tastes and preferences. The new search function allows for discovery on any given topic via channels recommended by Vodio. Beyond recommendations from already existing channels and videos offered by Vodio, now, relevant channels from YouTube and pages from Facebook and Twitter will be searched and Vodio will convert those into a video channel, all in one simple click.

Vodio, with its highly refined and artfully designed interface, provides users with a seamless experience for discovering and watching videos on the iPhone and iPad. The app combines the advanced interface elements of some of the most popular apps with a strong emphasis on intuitiveness and simplicity, letting users easily swipe through the different channels of content to discover the videos they want to see.

“Our goal is to give our users the easiest entry point for video consumption with the most natural and intuitive video experience available on the iPad and iPhone,” said Jonathan Messika, CEO of Vodio Labs. “We wanted to take the experience of finding videos beyond the act of merely subscribing to a certain feed of content, and rather create a system that pulls together all the videos available out there on the web and create channels that would match the things you’re interested in.”

Vodio is also highly intelligent in the way it searches for, and organizes video content. Beyond simply displaying the videos that are tagged by a certain topic or category, the app is able to show videos that have been shared about or by an individual or media outlet. If a blog posts a video in an article, that video will be displayed in the channel right alongside videos that the blog has produced on its own to create a more whole overview of that blog.

“If someone enjoys reading The Rolling Stone magazine for instance, we have a reason to believe his interests go beyond just videos produced by the magazine, such as interviews or reviews,” Messika added. “They may also want to view new video clips by various artists, live performances and any other videos related to or shared by the magazine on its website and through various social networks.”

Several apps aggregate video content, whether it’s directly from YouTube, using Twitter, Facebook or any other combination of social networks. Most of these apps pull in content based on feeds that are fixed at the source. Vodio, however, is able track videos as they are shared by thousands of sources, classify them into the various categories and surface the most popular videos for users based on their personal taste and preferences. Vodio learns from the user’s own behavior within the app as well as their social graph (Facebook, Twitter etc.) what videos they would be interested in.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iOS 4.3 or later
* 5.5 MB

Verizon: HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 in stores; Best Buy offering black Nokia Lumia 822 for $49.99

Yes, Verizon now has the HTC 8X and the Nokia Lumia 822 in its stores. The former is available now in black for $199.99 after a signed two-year contract. The blue model is scheduled to ship before November 19th and the red one should be out by November 27th. You know the story by now, 4.3 inch Super LCD 2, incredible 342ppi pixel density and a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 driving Miss Daisy. 1GB of RAM is aboard with NFC support, 8MP and 2MP cameras in back and front respectively. 16GB of native memory is inside and of course, the phone offers LTE connectivity.

The Nokia Lumia 822 is $99.99 at Verizon with a two-year pact. If you don't mind getting the phone in black, Best Buy is offering the very same device for $49.99 on contract. If you're the lazy type, Best Buy's website simply matches Big Red's pricing so if you want the discount, you will need to get into the car (motorcycle, bicycle or even a rickshaw) and head down to the actual glass and steel location. Better hurry because supplies at Best Buy are said to be low.

For a quick refresher, the Nokia Lumia 822 has a 4.3 inch WVGA, AMOLED display with a 217ppi pixel density. The same processor found on the HTC 8X  is on board, along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of native storage. Unlike the HTC model, the Nokia Lumia 822 offers a microSD slot. The back and front-facing shooters weigh in at 8MP and 1.2MP respectively, and there is LTE connectivity.

RIM's Heins: iOS is a downsized PC platform, BB 10 is true mobile computing

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins is on the hot seat, and as the days get closer and closer to the January 30th 2013 introduction of BlackBerry 10, his job has changed. From exhorting his teams inside RIM to get things done on time, Heins' job now is to be the evangelistic leader who spreads the word to the media, trying to make believers of those who have been let down by the Canadian manufacturer dating back to the half-baked software on the BlackBerry Storm 9530.

The BlackBerry Storm fiasco occurred under a fairly weak leadership that suffered from a lack of vision and couldn't embrace the touchscreen era that was thrust upon them by the launch of the OG Apple iPhone. But Heins believes that the role is now reversed and that the upcoming BlackBerry 10 is ahead of iOS. He calls iOS a downsized PC operating system compared to BlackBerry 10 which Heins describes as a "true mobile computing platform".

The RIM executive says that carriers are glad to see RIM being competitive again. He adds that you can't be a global leader in the industry without being strong in North America. Heins believes that BlackBerry will get support from U.S. carriers who are looking to offer more than just two strong platforms. He notes that Android is dominated by Samsung and sees the Korean company becoming the strongest player in the Windows Phone 8 market. Heins adds that other manufacturers can't compete with Samsung because of the latter's ability to source in-house, and even purchase displays from "corporate siblings". Carrier support will be one of the things Heins will be counting on to make BlackBerry 10 a success in the U.S. and Canada.

Earlier this year, Heins was criticized for aiming low with his comment that "we have a clear shot at being number three," behind iOS and Android. But Heins said that he had to be truthful. "Make no mistake, my aspiration is to win,” he said Thursday. "But I can’t sit here in front of investors and partners and say we will be number one." For those who have followed RIM for years, this is a refreshing change from the often outlandish statements made by the old regime, which had a problem with denial.

Where Heins has done his job is with getting everyone interested in seeing what BlackBerry10 is all about. There is anticipation for a BlackBerry device for the first time since the failed BlackBerry Storm launch. And for the first time in years, there is the sense that RIM is actually listening to the marketplace. Consider the specs for an device rumored to be RIM's first high-end BlackBerry 10 model, called the BlackBerry Aristo. Rumored to have  a 4.65 inch screen with 720 x 1280 resolution, a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064, LTE connectivity, and 2GB of RAM, these are undeniably high-end specs that would match-up nicely with the current high-tech models now in the market.

DROID DNA vs Galaxy Note II poll results: Yes, the DNA can do it!

OK, guys, we've given you enough time to cast your votes in favor of the HTC DROID DNA, or the Samsung Galaxy Note II. It's now time to see what the results are and start analyzing them!

So, it's relatively safe to say that you are actually in love with the DROID DNA by HTC, as you've stated it loudly and clearly that it has the potential to overcome the Galaxy Note II by Samsung in this increasingly bloody warfare. However, the margin between the two isn't that big, so this win doesn't mean HTC can relax. Nope, the Taiwanese manufacturer absolutely needs to keep those cutting-edge devices coming! The DROID DNA has managed to beat the Galaxy Note II in our poll with 53.87% of all votes, but the Note II still has quite a bit of following with 46.13%.

The DROID DNA seems to be the superior device in most categories, except for storage space, where it's basically stuck at 16GB, with no option to expand this. Meanwhile, the Note II comes in different internal memory variants and features a microSD card slot. Still, having vast amounts of storage space isn't a must for everyone, so we wouldn't consider this a deal-breaker for the DNA, especially when it comes with that beautiful $199 price tag, instead of the $299 that carriers are asking for the Note II. The only thing we can hope for now is a wider availability for the DROID DNA, which is currently exclusive to Verizon Wireless.

After facing some stern customer reactions on Twitter, Telstra admitted that demand was much higher than expected globally and that demand from its customers was “beyond amazing.” Telstra has also revealed that stock has been limited globally, which may mean that stocks could run thin if they have not done so already in other markets around the world.

Hopefully, these are signs of good times ahead for Nokia as well as Microsoft and the new Windows Phone 8 platform.  For the Telstra customers, Lumia 920 stock should be replenished by November 27th.
