Nokia Lumia 510 Review

Introduction:

Nokia Lumia 510 is the rock bottom price point for a Windows Phone Lumia, starting in the sub-$200 without a contract, and available in various flashy colors.

The price range and color scheme indicate that it is geared towards emerging economies and the younger crowd, and that's where the Lumia 510 is headed indeed.

Is there something in the entry level specs that could make the WP 7.8 handset stand a fighting chance against cheap Androids? Read on our review to find out...

Design:

The soapy shaped Lumia 510 is built solid, without creaks or crevices around the chassis. It is also relatively thin and light, compared to some other smartphones we've seen.

You can compare the Nokia Lumia 510 with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool.

Nokia has even thrown in a painted metal band around the sides, which adds to the rigidity of the phone, and ups the build materials mojo a bit. The rounded corners plus tapered back with soft touch finish make it comfortable to hold and easy to operate with one hand.

All three buttons on the side – the lock key, volume rocker and two-stage shutter button – are easy to find and press, with deep tactile feedback.
Display: The 4” screen is recessed for added protection, so the phone lies on the edges of the metal rim that surrounds the phone, thus avoiding scratches when face-down. The display is with 480x800 pixels of resolution which rings in a good 233ppi pixel density number.

Viewing angles are decent with this display, but brightness is not that great and the reflectance ratio seems to be high, so viewing it comfortably outside is a challenge at times.

Nokia Lumia 505 coming 'soon'

The affordable Nokia Lumia 505 first leaked out less than a week, teased by Mexican carrier Telcel, and now the device has reappeared and seems to be ‘coming soon.’ The Lumia 505 is an affordable device that never got officially unveiled by Nokia, and for the time being it seems like its launch will only happen in limited markets.

It does pack a lot of muscle for an affordable handset, and most surprising is the inclusion of an 8-megapixel camera. That’s great news for those who prefer smaller and more affordable devices. Here is what is known so far about the Lumia 505’s specs:

- 3.7” Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels
- 8MP rear camera
- 4GB internal storage
- Windows Phone 7.8

The Lumia 505 will ship in three color versions - a black, red and magenta one. Stay tuned, we’ll update you as soon as we learn about its actual price and release date.

AT&T sells out of cyan, red and yellow Lumia 920, there are still some black and white ones though

Who said Nokia's in a bad shape? Well, OK, they may not be exactly... fine right now, but if they can keep those innovations coming, who knows, maybe we'll soon see a comeback!

At least, that is the impression we get observing the current Nokia Lumia 920 stock at AT&T, which is almost nonexistent. As a matter of fact, it seems AT&T has already sold out of the more colorful versions of the handset - the cyan, red and yellow one, and is now left with black and white Lumia 920s only. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that people are buying those colorful Lumias like crazy, it may just be that AT&T has kept fewer of those in stock. Still, it is undeniable that any handset that has the label "Sold out" attached to it has something going for it.

The good thing is that it's still early to start panicking, as those who want to get a taste of that floating PureView camera and brilliant 4.5" ClearBlack screen can still do so, albeit in black or white only. Have you gotten your Lumia 920 yet? Which color do you prefer?

Verizon: HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 in stores; Best Buy offering black Nokia Lumia 822 for $49.99

Yes, Verizon now has the HTC 8X and the Nokia Lumia 822 in its stores. The former is available now in black for $199.99 after a signed two-year contract. The blue model is scheduled to ship before November 19th and the red one should be out by November 27th. You know the story by now, 4.3 inch Super LCD 2, incredible 342ppi pixel density and a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 driving Miss Daisy. 1GB of RAM is aboard with NFC support, 8MP and 2MP cameras in back and front respectively. 16GB of native memory is inside and of course, the phone offers LTE connectivity.

The Nokia Lumia 822 is $99.99 at Verizon with a two-year pact. If you don't mind getting the phone in black, Best Buy is offering the very same device for $49.99 on contract. If you're the lazy type, Best Buy's website simply matches Big Red's pricing so if you want the discount, you will need to get into the car (motorcycle, bicycle or even a rickshaw) and head down to the actual glass and steel location. Better hurry because supplies at Best Buy are said to be low.

For a quick refresher, the Nokia Lumia 822 has a 4.3 inch WVGA, AMOLED display with a 217ppi pixel density. The same processor found on the HTC 8X  is on board, along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of native storage. Unlike the HTC model, the Nokia Lumia 822 offers a microSD slot. The back and front-facing shooters weigh in at 8MP and 1.2MP respectively, and there is LTE connectivity.

Nokia Lumia 920 sells out at Telstra, demand “beyond amazing”

While AT&T contends with slow fulfillment of customer orders for the Lumia 920, in the land down-under, Telstra exhausted its inventory for pre-orders in less than a day.

After facing some stern customer reactions on Twitter, Telstra admitted that demand was much higher than expected globally and that demand from its customers was “beyond amazing.” Telstra has also revealed that stock has been limited globally, which may mean that stocks could run thin if they have not done so already in other markets around the world.

Hopefully, these are signs of good times ahead for Nokia as well as Microsoft and the new Windows Phone 8 platform.  For the Telstra customers, Lumia 920 stock should be replenished by November 27th. If you have been thinking of picking up a Lumia 920, check out our review of this handsome and capable device and get your order in.

Verizon to have Nokia Lumia 822 and HTC 8X in stores tomorrow, Nov. 15

If you are the type of person that likes to touch and hold a device before buying it, and resisted the urge to pre-order the new Windows Phones available on Verizon, you will be glad to know that tomorrow, Verizon corporate stores will have the new Nokia Lumia 822 and Windows Phone 8X by HTC in stock Thursday, November 15th.

This availability coincides with when the first pre-ordered devices should be out for delivery the same day. Now, if you had your sights set on a red HTC 8X or a grey Lumia 822, you will still need to order those online as it does not look like Verizon will carry those colors in the store. The black and white Lumias and the black and blue 8X devices should be in stock.

The Lumia 822 is only $99.99 on a two-year agreement and the Windows Phone 8X will be $199.99 for the same agreement. Both devices support wireless charging (a Verizon exclusive on the 8X). Each device has its own distinction within the Windows Phone 8 landscape.

The HTC 8X has a beautiful 720x1280 display, svelte form factor, 16GB of storage, and a wide-angle front facing camera so the whole family can fit in on a video call. The 8X also has the HTC hub which provides a live tile summary of time and weather if you want it.. The Lumia 822 while considered mid-range has all the standard Nokia experience apps on board, including Nokia City Lens, Nokia Drive and Nokia Music. The Lumia also has 16GB of storage and supports microSD cards up to 64GB.

Are you going to pick one up? Which one?
