Love it or hate it, the print magazine business is continuing to dwindle due to its collision with the increasingly popular smartphones. Last year, for example, magazine circulation in the US has reportedly dropped 9.5%, and the blame is put on smartphones.
Here's the explanation: According to the Alliance for Audited Media, people have stopped paying attention to the magazines on the impulse-buy racks at supermarkets. While waiting in line at checkout, instead of looking for what other stuff to put in their cart, customers often prefer to just take a look at their phones and do whatever the do with them. It seems the market watchers have identified this phenomenon as "mobile blinders," as it makes consumers "blind" to certain types of products.
Some popular magazines have seen quite a drop in sales last year. Cosmopolitan, for example, has recorded a drop of 18.5% in single copy sales. Other publications that have registered significant loss of circulation include People and Star.
Well, what can we say? Those publishers better start working on their digital versions, because that's where things are headed!

Phones 4U appoints Tech Data Mobile to manage supply chain

Tech Data Mobile will handle all warehousing, web and telesales activities for Phones 4U in the UK and Ireland
Phones 4U has appointed Tech Data Mobile to manage its end-to-end supply chain operations in the UK and Ireland.
From May, the distributor will operate all warehousing, forward and reverse logistics activities for the retailer’s 680 stores.
It will also handle Phones 4U’s web and telesales operations.
Tech Data Mobile’s vice president for services Richard Baxendale said the contract was a “massive vote of confidence” in its ability to meet the demanding supply requirements of a major retailer.
“This is another great win for Tech Data Mobile’s services business in Europe, adding to a number of important contracts that we have secured over the past 12 months and underlining the strength of our performance in the services sector,” Baxendale said.
President Rod Millar called the appointment a “major milestone” in the history of Tech Data Mobile.

Mozilla and Geeksphone unveil Keon and Peak Firefox OS developer phones

Mozilla's Firefox OS for smartphones continues to make progress toward a public release. Today Mozilla announced that it'll be teaming up with Geeksphone to offer two developer preview handsets running the Linux and HTML5-based Firefox OS to help developers prep for the arrival of the new platform. The two handsets are dubbed Keon (above) and Peak (below), with the former being an entry-level model while the latter is a bit higher-end. Here are the specs for both units:
Keon: 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 3-megapixel camera, 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, microSD slot, 1,580mAh battery, UMTS 900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1900/2100Peak: 4.3-inch qHD IPS display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, microSD slot, 1,800mAh battery, UMTS 900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1900/2100The first units are expected to be made available sometime in February, but there's no word yet on how much they'll cost. Mozilla does say that these unlocked dev phones will receive over the air updates, though, so anyone that decides to take the plunge and start developing HTML5 apps for Firefox OS will be getting the latest versions of Mozilla's software.
Firefox OS has already been backed by a few different companies, including manufacturers like ZTE and Alcatel as well as Spanish carrier Telefónica. Here in the U.S., Sprint has voiced its support for Firefox OS, but so far there's been no word on when we might see Hesse and Co. actually release handsets running Mozilla's new OS. Despite the fact that there's still some details that are up in the air regarding the first public Firefox OS hardware and its launch, the platform is still showing that it's coming along, and it'll be interesting to see how consumers respond to the devices and the recognizable "Firefox" name. T-Mobile to offer up to $200 rebate on some new phones just as subsidies are about to end
The nation's fourth largest carrier made an announcement recently that ends subsidized handset pricing for the carrier in 2013. But before the ball drops in Times Square and the mobile operator puts away its checkbook, T-Mobile is giving customers once last chance to take advantage of as much as $200 off the down payment on new models. The rebate brings the down payment required to pick up some pretty big name models down to the low, low price of zero with the balance getting paid off over 20 months.
The phones available for $0 down include the Samsung Galaxy S III, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and even the Google Nexus 4. With all of those handsets and some others, you pay $20 each month for 20 months to complete the payment of the phone. Some models, like the Samsung GALAXY Note II will require a $99.99 down payment (after the $200 rebate) in addition to the EIP of $20 a month for 20 months. Of course, you will need to sign a two-year contract for the Unlimited Value plan in order to get any of the rebates.
The deal starts on Friday and runs through the end of the year.

Texas Instruments confirms it is moving away from phones, will slash 1,700 jobs
Texas Instruments, or TI, has finally officially confirmed that it is moving focus away from its OMAP mobile chips business and will instead focus on “embedded markets.” We have seen the first hints a couple of months ago, but this time TI is taking some definitive measures cutting some 1,700 jobs, all related to OMAP.
While TI OMAP chips are still found in some of the most popular on the market like the Amazon Kindle Fire, the Motorola Droid and last year's Samsung Galaxy Nexus, most recently competition has gotten really aggressive with Qualcomm and Samsung now powering most modern devices. Nvidia is also expected to catch up next year. All of that forced TI out of the business.
Slashing 1,700 jobs means a 5% reduction in workforce, but also savings of $450 million per year. The change will initially be tough and TI will immediately take a $325 writedown this quarter.

DALLAS, Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Consistent with previously stated strategic plans, Texas Instruments (TI) (TXN) announced today it will reduce costs and focus investments in its Wireless business on embedded markets with greater potential for sustainable growth. Cost reductions include the elimination of about 1,700 jobs worldwide.
TI previously outlined intentions to focus its OMAP processors and wireless connectivity solutions on a broader set of embedded applications with long life cycles, instead of its historical focus on the mobile market where large customers are increasingly developing their own custom chips. These changes require fewer resources and less investment.
“We have a great opportunity to reshape our OMAP processor and wireless connectivity product lines to concentrate on embedded markets. Momentum is already building with new embedded applications and a broad set of customers, and we are accelerating our efforts in these areas,” said Greg Delagi, senior vice president of Embedded Processing. “These job reductions are something we do with a heavy heart because they impact people we care deeply about. We will work closely with all employees affected by these changes to provide a range of assistance related to compensation, benefits and job search.”
As a result of these actions, the company expects annualized savings of about $450 million by the end of 2013. Total charges will be about $325 million, most of which will be accounted for in the current quarter. TI’s fourth-quarter outlook, published on October 22, did not comprehend these restructuring charges.
