T-Mobile to offer up to $200 rebate on some new phones just as subsidies are about to end

The nation's fourth largest carrier made an announcement recently that ends subsidized handset pricing for the carrier in 2013. But before the ball drops in Times Square and the mobile operator puts away its checkbook, T-Mobile is giving customers once last chance to take advantage of as much as $200 off the down payment on new models. The rebate brings the down payment required to pick up some pretty big name models down to the low, low price of zero with the balance getting paid off over 20 months.

The phones available for $0 down include the Samsung Galaxy S III, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and even the Google Nexus 4. With all of those handsets and some others, you pay $20 each month for 20 months to complete the payment of the phone. Some models, like the Samsung GALAXY Note II will require a $99.99 down payment (after the $200 rebate) in addition to the EIP of $20 a month for 20 months. Of course, you will need to sign a two-year contract for the Unlimited Value plan in order to get any of the rebates.

The deal starts on Friday and runs through the end of the year.

MetroPCS expects stockholders to approve T-Mobile deal at meeting in February or March

MetroPCS CFO Braxton Carter told a Morgan Stanley investor conference on Friday that the company had spoken with several other potential suitors, but is now firmly 100% behind the deal it has inked with T-Mobile.The combination of the nation's fourth and fifth largest carriers should strengthen T-Mobile and make them a more viable challenger in the industry. Carter also said that the combined company will outperform some of its earlier estimates for profit margins thanks to savings between the two firms and MetroPCS' expansion into new parts of the country. Carter added that he believes that MetroPCS shareholders, who by law need to approve the deal, are behind the acquisition. Both firms filed proxy statements with the SEC on Friday to get the votes of their respective shareholders on the deal. MetroPCS is expected to hold its shareholder vote for February or March.

Last year, Sprint and its CEO Dan Hesse were said to have agreed on an $8 billion buy out of MetroPCS only to have Sprint's board reject the deal. Both T-Mobile and MetroPCS' boards have agreed to the current acquisition leaving stockholders and regulators left to sign off on the deal.

Unsubsidized, the phone is $499.99 or $150 more than the price on the Google Play Store. The device is powered by Android 4.2 and runs over the carrier's HSPA+42Mbps pipeline. If Windows Phone 8 is more your thing, you can pick up the HTC 8X for $149.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate and 20 equal monthly payments of $20 and a two-year contract on the Value plan. With the Classic plan, the phone is $199.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate and a signed two-year contract. With a 4.3 inch Super LCD 2 display protected by Gorilla Glass 2 and sporting resolution of 720 x 1280, the 342ppi pixel density is tremendous. HSPA+42Mbps connectivity offers fast data speeds.

Another Windows Phone 8 model launching from T-Mobile on Wednesday is the Nokia Lumia 810, an exclusive to the carrier. On the Value plan, the phone is $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and 20 monthly payments of $20 with a signed two-year contract. Those on the Classic plan can pick up the device for $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a signed two-year pact. The Nokia Lumia 810 is equipped with  4.3 inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display, an 8MP camera on back and a 1.2MP Skype HD certified front-facing camera. The unit offers HSPA+42Mbps connectivity.

If it's a tablet you need, T-Mobile has you covered there too, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. The Android 4.0 powered tablet offers a 1280 x 800 resolution and a dual-core 1.5GHz processor. However, for the same price, you can pick up the Google Nexus 10 off-contract at the Google Play Store with a mind-blowing 2560 x 1600 resolution and a 300ppi pixel density.
