AT&T buying Alltel for $780 million, getting more coverage in six states

AT&T, the nation’s second largest carrier, has just announced that it will acquire Atlantic Tele-Network’s wireless service known under the Alltel brand for $780 millions delivered in the form of good old hard cash.

This will buy AT&T licenses, network assets, retail stores and some 585,000 subscribers.

Alltel’s network covers nearly 4.6 million people in rural areas throughout the states of Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina. This expanded coverage will obviously be of biggest benefit to AT&T.

Not least, AT&T will get a hold on spectrum in the 700MHz, 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands. All those are frequencies that should easily be integrated in AT&T’s existing network.

If the FCC and the Departmen of Justice greenlight the deal, it should close sometime in the second half of 2013.

Press Release
AT&T To Acquire Wireless Spectrum and Assets from Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc., Enhance Wireless Coverage in Rural Areas

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AT&T* today announced that it has signed an agreement with Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. (ATNI) to acquire the company's U.S. retail wireless operations, operated under the Alltel brand, for $780 million in cash. Under terms of the agreement, AT&T will acquire wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, retail stores and approximately 585,000 subscribers.
ATNI operates under the Alltel name in the U.S., and its network covers approximately 4.6 million people in primarily rural areas across six states - Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina. The acquisition includes spectrum in the 700 MHz, 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands and is largely complementary to AT&T's existing network. ATNI currently operates a retail CDMA network for its subscribers in these areas. AT&T expects that as it upgrades the network, ATNI customers and existing AT&T customers who roam in these areas will enjoy an enhanced mobile Internet experience.
AT&T expects integration costs for network conversion from CDMA will not result in significant dilution to EPS or impact to cash flow. The transaction is subject to review by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice and to other customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second half of 2013.

Sony getting ready to release new Android flagship that will directly rival iPhone 5, Galaxy S III

Sony might have lost its positions in the smartphone market, but it’s confident that it will regain them and will do so by launching a smartphone that would give the new iPhone and Galaxy S a run for the money.

“We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” Sony CVP of Sales & Marketing, Dennis van Schie, said.

Could van Schie be talking about the rumored upcoming Sony Yuga? Our guess is yes. We have heard that the Sony Yuga will sport a 5-inch 1080p display, most likely run on a quad-core Snapdragon S4, feature 2GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel camera.

What’s more, this phone could turn out to be water and dust resistant with IP57 certification. It is expected to run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and come with on-screen buttons, a departure from the usual layout for Sony devices.

On the tablet side of things, Sony will stay at it even though it admits it’s now very hard to eke out profit out of tablets.

“We will bring in addition to the existing Xperia Tablet other Android tablets to the market, but not many,” said Van Schie. That focus on quality, not quantity can only be welcomed.

Finally, Sony admits it is not planning any Windows Phone devices in the very short term, but keeps a close watch on the platform to see if it manages to lift off.

We could not blame them for that - after all latest research showed that even Samsung’s bada and Symbian still outsell Windows Phone. But that juicy new flagship definitely sounds promising, what do you think?
