Average user looks at phone 150 times a day: here is what we are looking at

Have you ever heard about the 150 number in the context of cell phones? In 2010, Nokia found 150 is the number of times the average person looks at a phone every single day. And here we are not talking just about smartphones, feature phones as well.

All earlier studies had this number below 100 so having the then new report about the reality being 50% higher is quite shocking. Interestingly, T-Mobile has confirmed the same number for the U.S. market in a study of its own last year. And in the UK, claims are that number has reached 200.

Even if you're not in Times Square, you can watch the ball drop in real time over your phone or tablet

You might remember the nifty little app that Toshiba sponsored last year for the Times Square ball drop of 2012. A year later,Toshiba is offering the same features on a new app for the Times Square ball drop of 2013. Live streaming video will let you watch the festivities, including the dropping of the ball that welcomes in the new year. The app has a countdown timer, counting down the days hours, minutes and second until 2013 is ushered in. Until the streaming video from Times Square goes live, you can view some videos of last year's countdown. And just like last year, you can use the app or the camera on your phone to take a picture and upload it for a chance to have it posted on the large ToshibaVision screen in Times Square. Lastly, there is a schedule of events that will be taking place in the Times Square area and it includes some fun facts about the ball drop. For example, did you know that the ball drops 70 feet in 60 seconds, or that it weighs 11,875 pounds? Perhaps you were aware that it is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and is lit up by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.

The app is available for free from iTunes or the Google Play Store. It is becoming a New Year's tradition, so why not make installing it your New Year's tradition. We should point out that the app is a little laggy, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the ringing out of 2012, and the ringing in of 2013.

New York Times for Android app updated for tablets

All the news that's fit to print wasn't fitting very well on 10 inch Android tablets. So The New York Times for Android has been updated to offer a better UI for those with the larger sized tablets like the Google Nexus 10. The update allows the image on screen to adjust to different screen sizes. On the 10 inch glass, The New York Times offers a "more compelling layout" with multiple columns, larger images and scaled typography.

The updated New York Times for Android also gives you more control over how you receive Breaking News. A quick look at the Top News will now show you the latest news and features from other sections. And the update also brings some bug fixes and enhancements to the app. This will be version 3.0 for those keep track of such things.
