Verizon activated 6.2 million iPhones of 9.8 million total smartphones in Q4 2012

Verizon Wireless has just posted its quarterly results and while the nearly $2 billion loss might be shocking, what’s more shocking is that the nation’s largest carrier managed to deliver one of its best quarters in terms of new subscriptions and smartphones sales.

Of course, a huge part of the loss is the damaged infrastructure in the East Coast after the devastating hurricane Sandy.

What most of you could be wondering, though, is just how many smartphones, iPhones, Androids and Windows Phones did Verizon sell in Q4 2012?

The answer is a whopping 9.8 million. What’s even more interesting is that 6.2 million, or almost two thirds of them were Apple iPhones. The majority of the remainder are Android devices.

This is a very impressive number. Here is how Verizon iPhone sales broke down in previous periods:

- 3.1 million iPhones activated in Q3 2012
- 4.2 million iPhones activated in Q4 2011

This definitely sets expectations high for Apple’s own results about to be unveiled soon.
