Leaked photo shows Android 4.2.2 update rolling out to Nexus devices

An image showing the Android 4.2.2 update has surfaced, thanks to a user on Reddit. We’ve known for sometime now that Google was testing the update, and that it would be hitting Nexus devices in mid-February. The new software supposedly addresses a pesky Bluetooth streaming issue with other pressing matters, such as security enhancements, device performance, minor cosmetic changes and more bug fixes.

Of course, to no ones surprise, Android 4.2.2 looks to be rolling out to carrier-unlocked Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones, as well as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.

Let us know if you’re seeing the update on your Nexus.

Leaked screenshots show Android 4.1 for Sony Xperia S

Before the Sony Xperia Z was a gleam in the eye of Sony designers, there was the Sony Xperia S. No, this device didn't quite capture the same buzz at CES 2012 that the Sony Xperia Z did in Las Vegas this year, but with that unique translucent stripe near the bottom tenth of the phone, the design was rather mesmerizing. The Sony Xperia S was voted our readers' favorite Android phone from 2012 CES and second overall to the Windows Phone powered Nokia Lumia 900. The Xperia S originally launched with Android 2.3.5 but has subsequently been updated to run Android 4.0.4. And Sony is not stopping there.

The Sony Xperia S is expected to be updated to Android 4.1 no earlier than April, based on information that Sony released last month. The updated OS build will start with 6.2.X.X.XX and have a new 3.4 kernel, compared to the current 3.08 kernel. Of course, there will be new features for the user of the device including those seen on newer Sony handsets like Power Management, Find My Xperia and Screen Mirroring. And there is the usual bag full o' Google 4.1 goodies like Project Butter and Google Now with the latter updating you with information you need to know, when you need to know it.

Down below, we have some screenshots for you to take a look at, which were culled from an Android 4.1.2 test build for the Sony Xperia S. You like?

Verizon denies that a hacker leaked data from 300,000 customers

Earlier on Saturday night, we passed along a story that a hacker had stolen information from 3 million Verizon Wireless customers that was in plain-text.  Furthermore, he allegedly posted the information for 300,000 customers online beginning on Saturday. The hacker, who used the name "TibitXimer" before his Twitter account was taken down, sent out a tweet to make some clarifications to the story. The names and information were taken from a list of VerizonFIOS customers, said the hacker, and the information he took included sensitive data like serial numbers, names, addresses, starting date with Verizon, password to their account, phone numbers, and more.

Now, Verizon has come out with a statement that adds more clarification to the original story. A Verizon spokesman, Alberto Canal, says that "The ZDNet story is inaccurate." Canal says that there was a smaller incident months ago which resulted in no Verizon system being breached and no root access allowed despite the hacker's claims. He added that the number of people involved was a fraction of what was reported.

Verizon said it had contacted authorities and notified the customers whose information was involved so that they could beef up their defenses against the use of their personal data. The company said it alerted law enforcement on Saturday in light of the new allegations made by the hacker, whose main worry was the chance that his Twitter account would be closed. That became reality at around 11:15pm EST Saturday evening.

Picture of ZTE Grand S leaked; 5 inch 1080p device soon to be introduced at CES 2013

Earlier this month, we pointed out how the CES 2013 web site revealed that the ZTE Grand S would be introduced at the show on January 8th. At the time, we also learned that the phone will have a 5 inch screen with resolution of 1080p becoming another device that will offer an outrageous pixel density in the 440ppi area. The HTC DROID DNA is a member of that club and a number of other handsets will soon be joining such as the Sony Xperia Z and the Oppo Find 5 to name a couple.

A leaked picture of the ZTE Grand S reveals the phone's model number as the Z753 and the manufacturer has also been teasing the device on its Sina Weibo account. Expected to be the thinnest full HD display phone at 7.6mm, the internals are not yet known but could include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP camera.
We are looking forward to seeing this model presented next month at CES as ZTE continues to ride the momentum that has made the company the fourth largest smartphone manufacturer on the planet.

Another BlackBerry 10 video tutorial leaked

Earlier this month, we showed you a leaked video tutorial for the BlackBerry 10 L-Series handset. The gestures displayed in the video allowed the user to see the tool bar on the top of the screen by pulling down on the display. At the same time, a tool bar on the bottom disappeared. An upward scroll of the screen reduced the image to thumbnail size.

This time, the image on the screen reveals a weather application rather than the travel website or app that was seen on the first leak. The gestures appear to be the exact same as seen previously. Like the first leak, it isn't much but it does show us how the gesture based UI handles some tasks. What do you guys think about this early look at BB10?

Leaked Nokia presentation slide reveals Windows Phone 7.8 features

Once it became obvious that Microsoft was not going to allow Windows Phone 7 models to be updated to Windows Phone 8, owners of models like the Nokia Lumia 900 were curious to know just how close to Windows Phone 8 their handset would get. Fairly quickly, the Redmond based tech titan made it clear that the sidewalk would end at Windows Phone 7.8, giving some of the original Windows Phone handsets a taste of what Windows Phone 8 was all about. A leaked slide used in a Windows Phone 7.8 presentation reveals some of the new features that are coming to some of the older Windows Phone devices. The slide talks about the new Start screen coming in the update along with the three Live Tile sizes to help personalize the phone. Twenty themes, matching the number found in Windows Phone 8, are aboard. Internet Explorer has security updates and MP3 files can be edited to produce a ringtone. Some of these features were already leaked at the end of last month.

Other features coming to Windows Phone 7.8 include the ability to use Bing wallpapers to customize the lock screen. As we get closer to the actual Windows Phone 7.8 update, you can expect more features to be announced by the Redmond based firm. Those who bought Windows Phone 7 handsets from carriers in the states still have to do the remainder of their sentence before updating to Windows Phone 8 which means they are probably quite grateful for every new feature on Windows Phone 7.8.
