If You Want Two-Thirds Of Americans To Agree That Violent Video Games Are More Dangerous Than Guns, All You Have To Do Is Ask The Right Americans

If you need some handy numbers to argue that violent video games are more dangerous than guns, Public Policy Polling has just delivered a gift-wrapped poll result especially for you. In the middle of a long poll attempting to suss out potential front runners for the 2016 elections, PPP decided to toss in a question comparing violent video games and guns.

There you have it. Violent video games are a "bigger safety threat" than guns, according to two out of three respondents. Seems pretty open and shut. Everyone cross out the word "gun" on your pet piece of legislation and replace it with "video game!" The nation is saved!

Many of you may be reaching for your guns/lower jaw/commenting implement. Before we start firing off mouths/angry wall o' text screeds/bullets, let's have a look at the methodology.

PPP surveyed 800 voters nationally from January 31st to February 3rd. The margin of error for the survey is +/-3.5%. We oversampled 416 Democratic and 508 Republican primary voters with margins of error of +/-4.8% and +/-4.4% respectively. In Iowa between February 1st and 3rd we interviewed 313 Democratic and 326 Republican primary voters with margins of error of +/-5.5% and +/-5.4% respectively. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.
This certainly seems above board. So, why do the results seem so surprising? Well, maybe it's the prevailing demographics of those surveyed. As pointed out in the comments at Kotaku, there are two factors that skew the results.

1. 72% of the respondents are older than 45.

2. The "violent video games" question was only posed to Republican primary voters.

Now, this data pretty much agrees with the stereotypical view that older people and Republicans trust guns more than they trust violent video games. Sure, there are plenty of outliers along the way, but the Republican Party has generally fought gun control laws, and older people are generally more distrustful of recent technology. In fact, given a narrow enough demographic, you could probably get poll results that indicates that "most Americans" believe cellphones are a bigger safety threat than depleted uranium.

So, what PPP has actually done is gift-wrapped a set of numbers useful for preaching to the converted. All it does is add to noise that surrounds this heated topic. Considering there's nothing else resembling that question in the other several dozen pages, one wonders why the question appears at all. Truly bizarre. Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro debuts in video

Microsoft focuses on productivity and wants you to “do more” with the Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet which will be available on February 9th.

Microsoft provides a light overview of the Surface Windows 8 Pro. The form factor will be familiar to anyone that has seen or handled a Surface running Windows RT. The big differentiators between the tablets are that the Pro runs the full version of Windows 8 allowing you to run legacy applications, has an Intel i5 processor, a bit more RAM and more storage. The Pro also has a higher resolution 1920x1080 screen, bigger battery, and is a little heavier at just about 2 pounds.

The Surface Pro also comes with a stylus as part of the package, using Penabled technology by Wacom which allows the Surface to ignore your hand pressing against the screen when using the stylus for writing. One thing we do not see in the video is anywhere to stow the stylus in the tablet, which may concern some folks that have a propensity to lose things. However it is a full sized instrument, like a regular pen, so it will fit in your pocket protector just fine.

The Surface Windows 8 Pro can use the same Touch Cover or Type Cover, the former coming in all sorts of colors and limited edition styles, as the Surface RT. For those that have been waiting for the full Windows 8 experience in that sleek magnesium chassis, the time is coming soon. Are you going to pick up a Surface Windows 8 Pro?

Google's Happy Holidays video reveals a Google Nexus 10 dock

We recently showed you where you could pre-order the unannounced ASUS built audio dock for the Google Nexus 7. We were able to pass along information such as price, and the features ($39.99, microUSB port, 3.5mm earphone jack) on the dock. Now, a Happy Holidays video posted by Google reveals an audio dock for the Google Nexus 10. One of the problems about such a leak is that it doesn't come with any information outside of the sight of someone sliding the tablet into the dock. While ASUS made the audio dock for the 7 inch ASUS built Google Nexus 7 tablet, it would seem natural if Samsung is behind the audio dock for the 10 inch Google Nexus 10, which is manufactured by the Korean tech giant.

The Google Nexus 10 audio dock makes a couple of appearances at 57 seconds and at 1:16. It is not a large accessory, but does have a raised back to hold up the HD 10.1 inch screen. You might recall that the screen carries a resolution of 2560 x 1600, allowing the tablet to offer you a pixel density of 300ppi. This beats out the 264ppi pixel density on the 3rd and 4th generation Apple iPad tablets.

Obviously, both the 7 inch and 10 inch docks will not be making a house call in time for Christmas. But you could always slip an IOU into an envelope and deliver the dock later. And if that doesn't seem to go over well with the recipient, include a link to this story so the person receiving your gift can view the video below to see what they are getting.

Oppo Find 5 official - Full HD screen, steel frame, and Exmor RS camera with HDR video

Quality Meets Style with the OPPO Find 5 – The Fifth Element Unfolds

OPPO Find 5 Unveiled With 5" 1080P Screen, 13 Megapixel HDR Camera and More

BEIJING -December 12, 2012 -At the OPPO Find 5 "The Fifth Element" Launch Event held in 798 Art District today, OPPO introduced one of this year's most mysterious and anticipated mobile products, the OPPO Find 5. The all new, industry leading OPPO Find 5 was announced to an audience of over 500 members of the international press, OPPO fans, developers, and partners, in what marks a spectacular end of year for the mobile industry.

See - like you've been blind all along
The OPPO Find 5 features a 5.0" 1080p IPS screen with a staggering 441 PPI pixel density, allowing you to experience a world of crystal clarity and the most realistic colors. With OGS technology that combines touch sensors with display, colors are more vivid and lifelike, and you'll feel as if the screen contents are floating on its surface.

Despite its large screen, the OPPO Find 5 is easy to hold thanks to its super slim 3.25mm bezel. When the screen is off, the front becomes a borderless sheet of pure black, mysteriously calming yet satisfying to the eye.

Touch - and your fingers won't stop
Industrial design has always been one of OPPO's core strengths. An example is the Find 5 front frame. Although it only weighs a mere 6.3 grams, the front frame alone takes four hours to craft. Starting with a 210 gram piece of stainless steel, it undergoes 12 manufacturing processes, after which it is given a black chrome plating in a 1470 °F (800 °C) vacuum environment. The result from this demanding process not only protects the screen from impact, it also contributes to the Find 5's amazing look and feel.

The overall design of the Find 5 is minimalist, relying on straight lines and simple shapes that removes distractions, while at the same time being built using the best materials and techniques available, giving OPPO Find 5 a simple and understated, yet refined and premium look and feel.

Cherish and share, the beauty from every journey
On the backside, OPPO Find 5 comes with the most advanced 1/3.06-type 13-megapixel camera sensor available on the market, adept at taking great photos in low light conditions. With market-leading Stacked CMOS technology, it features an f/2.2 aperture, 4-layer coating and blue glass filters. On the front, Find 5 it is fitted with a 1.9-megapixel camera.

OPPO Find 5 is the world's first smartphone with hardware supported HDR photography and video recording. It redefines smartphone video recording, with its capability of recording video in 120 FPS, five times the speed that the human eye can perceive. Apart from videos being silky smooth in normal playback, they will also be smooth during slow-motion playback and clear during freeze-frames. In addition, the camera on the Find 5 is capable of taking 100 photos at 5 per second with Burst Mode.

OPPO Find 5 will bring you into a new era of wireless sharing. With NFC functionality, gently touching two phones will pair them in less than a tenth of a second, 50 times faster than Bluetooth pairing. OPPO's NFC SmartTags with preset actions will add simplicity and convenience to your life. Find 5 also supports Wi-Fi Display and DLNA, two technologies that allow you to wirelessly project screen contents onto your television in HD.

Listen, and rhythm will touch your heart
Find 5 comes with the powerful Dolby 3D surround sound technology and the exciting Dirac HD technology, combination of hardware and software usually only found in high-end audio and cinema sound systems. With Dirac, you will clearly hear a difference, and become immersed in music the way the artist originally wanted to express it.

Love, for it is the Fifth Element
OPPO never set out to create the most powerful phone. Internally, we have always said that we create products in the intersection of romance and technology, and Find 5 is a product that OPPO employees worked passionately and relentlessly on. Just like Plato was convinced of quintessence, an element beyond thematerial world, there is more to the Find 5 than the mere sum of its parts. There is an element beyond the purely rational, and that element is love. OPPO Find 5 is infused with of our love, a love we wish to explore with the world.

OPPO Find 5 is set to launch in early 2013 across selected markets.

TiltShift Video 5.0 Adds Enhanced User Interface for iPhone 5

Zaragoza, Spain – Independent developer, Fidel Lainez today is proud to announce the release of TiltShift Video 5.0 for iOS, an update to his app that employs powerful image processing techniques to enhance videos or photos. The update includes an optimized user interface for the iPhone 5. TiltShift Video also adds performance improvements, new graphics and optimizations for iOS 6.

TiltShift Video is a complete suite of tools for simulating the tilt-shift effect. Separate, continuously variable controls allow the user to adjust: the speed of the video; the saturation, brightness, contrast, and vignetting; the shape, strength, and smoothing of selective blurring; the background music soundtrack; and the opening and closing titles. Capable of creating highly artistic videos, TiltShift Video supports videos of any resolution and aspect ratio recorded by the iDevice on which it is installed, and can also import videos via iTunes sync.

Feature Highlights:
* Transform any video recorded with (or synchronized to) your device into an awesome tilt-shift video
* Export your videos in Full HD (1080p, only available for iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and the new iPad), HD (720p) or choose between the other export presets. [Export resolution is limited by the resolution of the original video]
* Change the speed of your videos: Speed them up to simulate time-lapse sequences or slow them down to create slow motion videos
* Use multi-touch gestures to adjust the blur strength and position to get incredible “miniature” effects, simulating tilt & shift lenses
* Easily adjust your video saturation, contrast, brightness and vignetting to get the best results
* Choose your video’s soundtrack from one of the catchy music loops provided with the app or, simply, select one of the songs in your library
* Process images from your Photo Library or extract still frames from your videos

At launch, in portrait or landscape orientation, TiltShift Video asks if the user wants to “miniaturize” a photo or video (selective focus is often used for simulating a miniature scene). The process is the same, but video processing offers more controls and options. Opening a video in the app, it fills 75% of the screen, with 8 function buttons in the lower control bar, and 4 or fewer slide controls below. Button 1 returns to the opening dialog and allows the selection of another video, and button 8 renders the video for export in its original size (e.g., 1920×1080), Big (540p) or Medium (360p).

Button 2 is Video characteristics and offers independent, slider controls for color saturation, picture contrast, picture brightness, and a vignette effect that creates an elliptical mask over the image, whose transparency can be set between 100 and 0% (black). The third button enables selective Focus/Blur, the featured effect of the app. The 5.0 update includes 5 different blur shapes and new multi-touch gestures to easily define blur areas. Control handles and arrows are also available to blur only that part of the video frame desired. In addition to the variety of linear, round, elliptical, and free-form blur shapes, TiltShift Video includes a smoothing slider control, which can make the edges of the blur hard or soft, adding to the realism of the selective focus created.

The fourth button controls Time effects, both slow-motion and time-lapse, fast-motion. Users can choose from realistic, digitally rendered speeds from 0.1x to 32x. Button 5 allows video producers to add a musical soundtrack to their video, either one of the provided loops or any song in the user’s iTunes Library. Button 6 gives filmmakers the opportunity to turn their video into a movie, complete with opening and closing titles. Finally, Button 7 gives users the ability to save any combination of settings as a named Preset, which can be saved and loaded for use in any future project.

Latest Improvements in Version 5.0:
* Fully optimized for iOS 6
* Added support for the iPhone 5 screen
* UI Improvements
* Bugfixes and optimizations

“The increased screen size of the iPhone 5 provides a major benefit to users.” says developer Fidel Lainez. “The bigger preview area helps to get exactly the desired result; at the same time, the increased size of the adjustment controls gives better precision during the editing.”

Language Support:
* U.S. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish

Device Requirements:
* iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5, iPod touch (3rd/4th/5th generation), and iPad 2/3/New iPad
* Requires iOS 6.0 or later
* Universal app optimized for display on all iOS devices
* 5.4 MB

Pricing/Availability:
TiltShift Video 5.0 is $1.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Photo & Video category. Review copies are available on request.

Based in Zaragoza, Spain, indie developer Fidel Lainez founded his business in 2010. Another BlackBerry 10 video tutorial leaked

Earlier this month, we showed you a leaked video tutorial for the BlackBerry 10 L-Series handset. The gestures displayed in the video allowed the user to see the tool bar on the top of the screen by pulling down on the display. At the same time, a tool bar on the bottom disappeared. An upward scroll of the screen reduced the image to thumbnail size.

This time, the image on the screen reveals a weather application rather than the travel website or app that was seen on the first leak. The gestures appear to be the exact same as seen previously. Like the first leak, it isn't much but it does show us how the gesture based UI handles some tasks. What do you guys think about this early look at BB10?

Google Glass competitor runs Android 4 and records 720p video

If you liked the idea of Google Glass, then you'll probably find this one interesting as well - the Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 is a wearable computer, which is a bit more similar to a handsfree than something like the Google Glass. Thinking about it, this concept seems a bit more acceptable to us than the weird design of the Glass.

Anyway, the Vuzix will be powered by Android 4.0, while its display will have a resolution of 400 x 240 pixels. You'll be able to pair the device to an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which will allow you to take calls, read messages and email and such kind of "headset" stuff. However, the device should also be able to display all apps that can output image signal to an external monitor. This means that you should be able to use it for navigation, web browsing, augmented reality and other useful applications. The Vuzix will be equipped with a GPS, 3-axis head-tracker, gyroscope and a digital compass to accurately track your movements.

The M100's built-in camera will be capable of recording 720p video, so the Google Glass's trademark feature is also covered here. Other features include a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 CPU, 1GB RAM and a microSD card slot and 4GB of internal storage. When it comes to battery life, the Smart Glasses M100 should be able to deliver up to 8 hours of handsfree use, and up to 2 hours of handsfree use with the display on, which may not sound like a lot, but... what other options are there?

The Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 is expected to go on sale in early 2013, but a developer bundle, including a Windows-based emulator, sample code, access to private coding portal, and an early M100 unit (when production starts), is currently priced at $999. The software goodies of this bundle are said to become available this December, but apparently, you developers will also have to wait until next year in order to receive your gadget.
